Presentation transcript:

Engaging first year students with dynamic animated videos Author: Evan Plowman Affiliation: School of Nursing, Midwifery and Indigenous Health Incorporating CSU Values Insight Helps students gain insight into how the I2 site works and also subject content. Videos communicate to the students that their teaching team has insight into how students want learning content to be delivered. Inclusive Simplicity of this mode of learning is highly inclusive as all students can easily access the same material with the click of a button Take complex concepts and make them relatable to all students using simple images, animations and language Impactful These Videos use a medium (short, informational videos) that most students are familiar with and can relate to. Videos are made to be visually entertaining, use sound clips to enhance the learning experience, and are fun and easy to watch. Inspiring Encouraging students to engage with the online format Sharing possibilities of online engagement with students to other faculty and disciplines The strategy Animated videos were integrated into an Interact 2 (I2) site that explore important concepts in fun and interactive ways for first year undergraduate nursing students. The videos are easy to make and can transfer significant amounts of information in very short time frames. This initiative improved engagement with the I2 site for this subject by making the online environment more accessible. It improved student satisfaction, reduced email traffic from students to academic staff and reduced the feelings of frustration and being overwhelmed that is commonly experienced by students new to study with online delivery. I want to do this! The program used to create this video was GoAnimate (www.goanimate.com).
