The Pilgrims sailed to America from Plymouth, England, in September,1620. The name of their ship was the “Mayflower”. There were 102 passengers.

They went to America for religious freedom and were among the first European settlers in America.

Their dangerous voyage lasted 66 days…

After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing the pilgrims dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Code.

They landed at Plymouth Rock, in what is now the state of Massachusetts in December,1620. The pilgrims’ first winter was difficult. Half of them died.

There were people living in America before the pilgrims arrived- the Native American Indians. They had their own customs and beliefs. The following spring the Indians taught the pilgrims how to hunt, fish, plant, and survive in America.

The crops did well, and in the fall of 1621 the pilgrims had a great harvest. The pilgrims invited their Indian friends to share this feast. They prepared a dinner of turkey, corn, beans, and pumpkins.

Thanksgiving Day is a time of festivity, family meals and reunions in America. Carved turkeys ,pumpkin pie, corns, cranberry sauce are the traditional dishes adorning the dinner tables in almost every house.

It is a time for families to get together for a long weekend It is a time for families to get together for a long weekend. Schools and offices are closed, relatives from other cities, students travel long distances to spend a holiday at home.

The turkey is the symbol of Thanksgiving and the main dish served on this holiday.

The pardoning of a Thanksgiving turkey has been a presidential tradition for the past 50 years.
