Welcome to (Y)OUR Library Good evening and welcome to your/our school library. I am Christina Myers the new librarian here at Ras Tanura Elementary School. Tonight, I would like to highlight what you can expect from me as the librarian and the programs that I will introduce this school year to support your child’s learning. Christina Myers

Mission Statement The mission of the Ras Tanura Elementary School Library is to teach and empower students to be effective users of information and technology. To encourage and prepare students to be life-long learners through the use of effective problem solving strategies. To accomplish this mission we will: Tonight , I would like to talk to you about, the mission statement for our library. Mission statements help to give clear expectations and goals. I will define our mission statement and then talk to you about the ways we will go about supporting our mission. Our mission for our library is to teach and empower students to be effective users of information and technology. To encourage and prepare students to be life-long learners through the use of effective problem solving strategies. So what are ways that we will go about supporting our mission?

Provide access to informational materials in a variety of formats and media One of the ways to support our mission statement is to provide access to informational materials in a variety of formats and media. Media can come in many forms. It could be a book, e-book, magazine, AV equipment or special collection resources. Students will have access to all of the materials to support their learning.

Stimulating interest in reading and in finding and using information and ideas in an ethical way With a world of information at our fingertips, kids today can research and find nearly everything they might possibly be looking for. But, they also need to have a strong foundation on copyright and fair use to know how to use the material ethically. Students will be taught about copyright and fair use throughout the school year. There are also posters in the library to help students remember what they can use or not.

Promote the use of the library by students, families and faculty (Y)Our library is an open door library. It’s not only for students’ to use but for families and the teaching community. I want (y)our library to feel safe, as well as a place to explore new ideas/concepts or a place to come together and share a love for reading. You will find the hours our library is open on the handout you received tonight but it is also available on the school library’s website.

Support the school's curriculum and reading initiatives By supporting the school's curriculum and reading initiatives students learning will be integrated throughout library lessons that connect what they are learning in their classrooms. I will be work with teachers to address learning needs of individuals and classes as well as find ways to support content that is taught in the classroom.

Programs Offered Author Studies Throughout the school year, the library will offer different types of programs. Some of these programs will be during the day for students. While others will be in the evenings for families to come in and enjoy some fun together. Author studies, storybook pumpkins, makerspace activities, family fun nights are just a few of the programs (y)our library will offer.

How Can You Help? You might be wondering what opportunities are available to get into (y)our library to help out. Some of the areas that I could use extra support in is: shelving books, checking in/out library books, reading to students etc.…I am simply one person but, with the help of volunteers we can do many great things. Does any one have any questions? Again, (y)our library is an open door. Please, feel free to stop in. Have a great night.
