Representative Government United States is a representative democracy We elect people to REPRESENT us in government Citizens have personal freedoms

Representative Government Before: After People believed they were not worthy unless royalty People worked for master and king Few men owned all the land or the king did British colonies ruled by King of Great Britain and Parliament People believed they had rights People worked together to rule with majority vote ALL citizens matter and have a voice People represented in government by president and Congress

MAGNA CARTA(English) (1215) English document that took power away from the king of England and gave them to the people Parliament (English legislative branch) had greater power over king to make decisions Gave the people the right to a jury trial

THE ENLIGHTENMENT Time period in the 1600s that emphasized reason and science to obtain knowledge

William Blackstone English lawyer established the concept of “rule of law” that rights could NOT be violated by government

Charles Montesquieu French philosopher to established the idea of “separation of powers.” (Different parts of the government have different responsibilities)

John Locke Englishmen who established the idea of “government with the consent of the governed.” “life, liberty and property.” Purpose of government was to protect rights of people. If government failed to do this, it could be overthrown.

ENGLISH BILL OF RIGHTS (1689) English document giving English citizens individual rights Right to bear arms(weapons) No new taxes without Parliament’s approval

VIRGINIA HOUSE OF BURGESSES (1619) First elected representative government in the colonies First time people voted in the colonies Had power to make laws for colony

MAYFLOWER COMPACT (1620) Plymouth, MA Social contract for “self government” and “the rule of law” Written by the men who sailed to America on the Mayflower ship

FUNDAMENTAL ORDERS OF CONNECTICUT (1639) First state constitution that established due process of the law (there are procedures law enforcement has to follow) Written by Thomas Hooker

Puritans and Pilgrims Came to British colonies for religious freedom beginning in the 1600s Believed everyone should read the Bible and learn moral lessons – had free schools Hard work and living moral life would get you into heaven First representative colony in British colonies – Mayflower Compact said “Self-government”

William Penn (1681) Given grant from king to found Pennsylvania Quaker (peaceful religion) Pennsylvania founded for religious freedom

THE FIRST GREAT AWAKENING (1720s – 1740s) Era of religious passion and excitement People found individual relationship with God Began to form own opinions about Bible
