Presentation transcript:

“Inside Auschwitz with Elie Wiesel and Oprah Winfrey.”

Personal Interview with Elie Wiesel Your request to have a personal interview with Elie Wiesel has been granted. You’ve studied the history of the Holocaust and have read his memoir, Night. Now you must think of all the questions you want to ask him. Think about his experiences, what he witnessed, and how he survived it. Your questions should reflect your knowledge of his memoir and of Holocaust history. You may ask him about his experiences, his feelings, and life after the Holocaust. After the video, you must compose 15 questions you will ask Elie Wiesel if an actual interview had been granted.

Student Question & Response Example Dear May Losotaluno, You may ask the question, "How can I have faith," period. Faith in humanity…faith in culture…faith in education. The killers were educated human beings. Many of them had college degrees. Auschwitz was not made in heaven and sent down. Human beings conceived Auschwitz, created it, built it, implemented it. So may I tell you, of course I am tempted at times to lose faith in humanity, but I will not. As for God, I am a Jew. And in my tradition, we say—or at least I say—"I can be a good Jew," which means a good human being, "with God or against God—but not without God." ~Eliezer Wiesel Dear Elie Wiesel, With human atrocities that happen even today, don't you ever feel like your attempt to have faith in humanity is hopeless? And how can you have faith in a God who watched your people perish under the fires? — May Losotaluno

Response #9 Why would Elie Wiesel want to return to Auschwitz, the place of much of his sorrow? Why is he willing to share his deepest thoughts with Oprah and broadcast them before millions of others? How does this interview help others to remember, to want to promote change?
