Are You Ready For High School?

Information about High School Courses Students earn 1 unit of credit for each successfully completed course. A credit can be earned only if a student has a 70 or higher at the end of the course. Honors courses require students to demonstrate a high level of academic rigor, manage complex assignments, and move at a faster pace.

Class Schedule In high school classes are arrange by using a 4X4 block schedule. In the 4X4 block schedule, students complete a year-long course in one semester.

North Carolina Course of Study Graduation Requirements Students must earn a total of 28 units as specified in their course of study to graduate. High school that implement an alternate schedules may adjust the numbers of credits required to receive a high school diploma.

MAGNET (SMALL HIGH SCHOOLS) Magnet High Schools Offer: Individualized attention Rigorous academic programs Easy transition into college STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT THE ONLINE DATA FORM AND COMPLETE A HARDCOPY PACKET FOR THE SCHOOL

City of Medicine Academy Focus is health and life sciences Students graduating are prepared to enter the health-care workforce and/or post- secondary healthcare education. Partners with several local universities, along with Durham Technical Community College and the Watts School of Nursing, to offer students opportunities for college credit and internships. Students can earn certification in several areas while still in high school.

Durham School of the Arts Provides a rigorous educational program emphasizing visual and performing arts. Offers beginning through advanced arts courses in band, chorus, piano, strings, guitar, art, sculpture, photography, dance, theater, and creative writing.

Hillside New Tech High School Provides project-based learning by capitalizing on novel technological resources. Combines rigorous and relevant college preparatory curriculum with several integrated courses, problem-based learning opportunities, and an emphasis on content literacy. Creates unique learning opportunities through collaborative schoolwork with internships in local businesses and required community service hours. The focus on computer engineering, electronics, and advanced sciences. Students will graduate with a high school diploma and up to 12 semester hours of college credit.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Hillside High School Provides students the opportunity to participate in a rigorous course of study, practice critical thinking, get involved in the community and develop their special talents with an international perspective. Students must be interested in learning, willing to actively participate in class, have excellent study and time management skills (generally demonstrated by As and Bs in prior coursework), and be prepared to spend an average of two to three hours outside of class on schoolwork.

Josephine D. Clement Early College High School at North Carolina Central University Is a partnership with North Carolina Central University. Students will graduate with a high school diploma, plus up to two years of college credit toward a bachelors degree.

Middle College High School at Durham Technical Community College For students in grades 11 and 12 ONLY Expands opportunities for academically capable high school juniors and seniors to earn a high school diploma and receive credit toward a post-secondary certificate, diploma, or associates degree. Students experience a rigorous program of study on the campus of a community college.

Southern School of Engineering and Sustainability The Southern School of Engineering (SSOE) is designed to substantially increase the number of minority and female students who will pursue advanced studies and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Program includes Biomedical Technology, Business Management and Sustainability, Computer Technology Engineering, and Infrastructure Engineering. Students will graduate with a high school diploma, plus up to one year of college credit towards a bachelors degree.

CTE PATHWAY CLUSTER

CTE PATHWAY CLUSTERS: Offer challenging work-based learning strategies Can only be taken at another school if it is not offered at your base school Require students to maintain a certain grade average and behavior standards Provide transportation from base school, ONLY Applications for the Lottery must be submitted online between February 1 – February 20, 2013 Require registration and orientation at the school was student is chosen through lottery

Finance, Business, Management and Administration Pathway theme is business and finance Learning experiences extended through job shadowing, mentoring, internships and college courses at a local university. Students completing the program will receive a certificate of financial studies in addition to their high school diploma.
