MOCK FEEDBACK 2017 Using your mock exam fill out the feedback sheet Which types of questions do you think you did best in? Which do you think you need to work on? To help your revision think about the topics that you did better at and which you need to revise more Using your mock exam fill out the feedback sheet

Diverse Places The average for the class was 16.6/50= 47%

Question 5ai What does AO1 and AO2 mean? Analysing the resource to identify a feature of the area indicated Expansion A01: 2 AO2: 1 New migrants will be attracted to places that already have significant numbers of the same ethnic group What does AO1 and AO2 mean? because there will be shared characteristics, e.g. language, belief systems , and existing family members may already be there with offers of housing and economic opportunities

Question 5aii Analysing the resource Expansion A01: 3 AO2: 3 Property prices will vary across the city and operate as a filter for (poorer) ethnic groups More diversity on the lake, perhaps because of port arrivals and/or airports and closer to CBD to both the north and south perhaps because of mixed housing Areas close to entry points (e.g. airports and dock areas) are likely to be more mixed Large African- American community immediately to west of CBD, with perhaps older and smaller properties of industrial working class There may be recruitment of migrants by specific industries, leading to concentrations in the areas where these are located White suburbs on outskirts or city, probably in more attractive areas with higher- cost commuter housing

Question 4B Explain why there are different perceptions of an urban area’s attractiveness as a living space (6) A01: 6

Sort the statements into AO1 and AO2 Question 4C Evaluate the view that successful urban management for some is likely to be unsuccessful to others AO1: 5 AO2: 15 Sort the statements into AO1 and AO2

Water In the real exam this section will be a lot bigger! Average for the class: 6.6/ 15= 44%

Question 6A Two marks for analyzing the graph and showing how the two transfers change over time: One mark for the connection between the two transfers TIP: Outline the changes and make a clear connection between them How many marks? Where are the marks? The graph shows that infiltration rates start higher but then quickly they start to fall off quite steeply, until they begin to level off to a lower and more constant rate. At the same time, the rate of surface runoff starts off lower and more constant, before starting to rise as the infiltration rate levels off. These two flows are linked. The rate of infiltration starts to fall as the soil store is filling up with water. As it fills, the infiltration capacity of the soil drops. At the same time, surface run-off starts lower as most of the precipitation that falls is infiltrating. However, as the infiltration capacity falls over time, less water infiltrates and so it travels by surface run-off. Identifies the trends in the graph and successfully links the two flows in a clear and effective explanation (3 marks)

Question 6b Study Figure 4b. Assess the likely impacts of changing precipitation on the hydrological processes in the drainage basins shown. AO1: 3 AO2: 9 Analyse the question- break it down. What do you need to include? Sort the statements into AO1 and AO2

Reflect and refine 1. Read through your answers to your weakest topic. 2. In your books re answer the 20 mark answer where you did not get full marks – you can use your own books and the text books to help.

ANSWER YOUR EXAM QUESTIONS FANTASTICALLY EVERY TIME! HOW TO EXAMINE ANSWER YOUR EXAM QUESTIONS FANTASTICALLY EVERY TIME!

Examine working conditions in countries with different levels of economic development. (8 marks) Select Apply Analyse / evaluate / Justify Conclude / decision / link

Examine working conditions in countries with different levels of economic development. (8 marks) Select relevant information to include in the answer. Highlight key words and command words, e.g. EXAMINE, WORKING CONDITIONS and LEVELS OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. Identify your case study examples. E.g. LIC (Ethiopia), MIC (India) and HIC (UK).

Examine working conditions in countries with different levels of economic development. (8 marks) 2. Apply the knowledge to answer the question. State what the working conditions are in each country, giving specific facts. Make sure you actually answer the question! E.g. The minimum wage in the UK is £6.31 for over 21s and rises with inflation every year. People in the UK are allowed holiday pay and working conditions are closely monitored by Health and Safety regulations. In India there is no minimum wage, or restrictions on who can work and how much they get paid. In Ethiopia, most people work in the primary sector of industry, due to the low levels of education and skills needed.

Examine working conditions in countries with different levels of economic development. (8 marks) 3. Analyse / evaluate / justify the content using specific facts and evidence. In this example you would compare the working conditions in Ethiopia with those in India and the UK. Look at the advantages and disadvantages. Use words like “however”, “on the other hand” and “whereas” to compare the different places. E.g. People in Ethiopia aren’t subject to strict controls over their working conditions as the UK. There is no minimum wage, whereas in the UK it is £6.31 for over 21s. There is no minimum age that people can start work in Ethiopia and India, meaning that children as young as 5 years old work in the brick making industry. This, in turn, makes them develop illnesses such as lung disease, due to breathing in smoke from the kilns. On the other hand, children in the UK aren’t allowed to start full time work until the age of 18, meaning they can stay in full time education and gain more qualifications than children in Ethiopia and India.

Examine working conditions in countries with different levels of economic development. (8 marks) 4. Conclude / make a decision / link back to the question. Make sure you’re always linking back to the question during, and definitely at the end, of your answer. E.g. The working conditions in different countries are not equal, depending on the level of economic development. The amount of investment in education is a contributing factor to the age that people start working in LICs and MICs, such as Ethiopia and India. Working conditions in the UK are strictly controlled and regulated due to the higher level of development in the UK.
