Connectives that Express Cause and Effect, Contrast, and Condition Chapter 19 The Steppers

The Steppers are a dance troupe with a purpose – to help older people feel good about themselves. Because of their own advanced ages, from 60-87 years old, the members of the Steppers have some expertise in these matters. What do they do? They dance. Due to their own ailments, they might be dancing with canes or walkers. However, when the music starts and they hit the stage, the toe-tapping and hand-clapping get going both on the stage and in the audience. Who makes up their audiences? Any group in the New York City area that can pay for the Steppers’ transportation can host them, so they dance in a variety of places, but mostly for senior citizens. There has been such a great response that the group always has a full dance card.

Use because of and due to to talk about a cause and effect. Due to their own ailments, they might be dancing with canes or walkers. Because of their own advanced ages – from 60-87 years old, the members of the Steppers have some expertise in these matters. What’s the cause? What’s the cause? What’s the effect? What’s the effect?

Use so to connect two cause and effect sentences. Which sentence is the cause? Which sentence is the effect? E The Steppers get asked to perform every week. ___ The Steppers are a very popular dance group. ___ The Steppers are a very popular dance group, so they get asked to perform every week. C

The choreographer of the Steppers, Barbara Taylor, is a spry 87-year-old former grade school principal. While many of the Steppers are retired, Ms. Taylor is still working. She teaches college psychology classes two days a week. And in spite of failing eyesight, she continues to create and perform in new Taylor-made dance routines (excuse the pun). So who can become a Stepper? Well, the minimum age is 60, so while some may be too young to be a Stepper, no one is ever too old! Ms. Taylor creates multi-level dance routines so that everyone can have a part in the performances—the only requirement is being young at heart!

Use so that to express a purpose. so that = in order to + verb Ms. Taylor creates multi-level dance routines in order to make sure everyone can have a part in the performance. Ms. Taylor creates multi-level dance routines so that everyone can have a part in the performance.

Use in spite of or in spite of the fact that to show contrast (unexpected result). In spite of being over 60 years old, all the Steppers give hour-long performances regularly. Are hour-long dance performances physically easy? NO same meaning NO Are most dance performers over 60? In spite of the fact that they are over 60 years old, all the Steppers give hour-long performances regularly. YES Do the Steppers regularly give hour-long performances?
