What’s New in Education?

Context and Timeline August 2010: CA State Board of Ed adopts ELA and Math Common Core Standards November 2012: CA State Board of Ed adopts new ELD standards September 2013: CA State Board of Ed adopts Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) January 2014: List of math instructional materials available Spring 2014: Pilot testing for Smarter Balanced ELA and Math tests Spring 2015: First Smarter Balanced ELA and Math tests November 2015: List of ELA instructional materials available July 2016: New History/Social Science Framework March 2017: ELPAC pilot (replacement for CELDT); summative 2018—includes NGSS April 2017: NGSS Science pilot; actual test 2018 January 2020: VAPA Standards Revision project

What’s Next? Integrated/Designated ELD 2017-2018 Writing Units of Study 2017-2018 6-8 New Math adoption K-5 Math adoption pilot 2017-2018 Begin NGSS training 2017-2018 Testing with new ELPAC 2017-2018 Testing with new CAASPP Science Test 2017-2018

Summary We have a long way to go, but we are in good company. Every school district in California has this same list in front of them. Our “detour” to work on literacy will make the rest of the work easier to navigate. Students will have greater success on the reading section of the ELPAC and will have more access to NGSS. Preliminary data is positive and shows that our literacy work is paying off.
