Information about PowerPoint

What is a Resumé? Personal document used when applying for a job For an academic job it is often called a “C.V.” (Curriculum Vitae) Includes: name, age, contact information, education, work experience, publications, major projects, personal and professional interests, awards, personal references And other stuff to reach your Goal = Convince reader (company) to hire you

A PowerPoint Resumé Assignment 3: PPT Resumé Your resumé in the form of a PowerPoint file To be run and graded by Murray (You will not be presenting it.)

What should be in your PPT-Resumé? A PPT-resumé is NOT a self- introduction of your life story. No baby photos! Focus on what an employer would want to know about you. The job you’re applying for? A position in some multinational company headquarters in Europe (you can decide which company and the job details)

Features that should be in your PPT-resumé: Graphics Interesting theme (template?) including background Makes sense for your purpose Good-looking Originality is an advantage to attract attention Include a graph, chart, or diagram Include a personal photograph

Features that should be in your PPT-resumé: Text Perfect spelling Perfect grammar Perfect punctuation Be careful with spacing around commas! Perfect formatting Sensible, logical, consistent

Features that should be in your PPT-resumé: Text In various styles (2-3), sizes, and colors Text appearing at a different angle Some text appearing line by line Sentences OK but not too long. Avoid paragraphs of text – Use point form Like this

Features that should be in your PPT-resumé: Text Paragraphs? Normally (when presenting a PPT): No long paragraphs of text Bad! Audience will read it and not listen to you Use sentences sparingly Short (<15 words) good for important things Use point form (phrases and terms) PPT-resumé: Paragraphs are OK since this will be read, not presented, but don’t overdo it!

Features that should be in your PPT-resumé: Movement Some interesting slide transitions (= animation to get from one slide to another) Some interesting (but not overdone) element animations: Entry, Emphasis, Exit Some good use of a motion path Movement should add interest Do not overuse this – can get sickening

Features that should be in your PPT-resumé: Focus in/out By some method of your choosing, show a list of points and focus on each one in turn, returning to the whole list after each focus. This technique shows logical structure: Show an overall plan, then focus in to one part, then go back out to the overall, then focus in to a different part, … Think of Lu Wei’s “Give 3 reasons”

Features that should be in your PPT-resumé: Audio (& video?) Have background audio (e.g. music) on a set of two slides. Starts automatically on a slide, turns off on exit from the next slide Have narration by you on one slide something you record in your own voice starts on a click, stops on exit from slide Video? Bonus on assignment Keep it short. Make sure it is embedded in the PPT file, not just a link to another file.

Features that should be in your PPT-resumé: Professionalism Should show you put time and thought into the preparation Should be attractive – good visual effect Should be serious, but not boring Should be interesting, but not silly Should incline the reader to trust you Should deliver your intended message In this case: “I would be a good employee”

Make sure your PPT-resumé has… Theme Graphics Text Movement Focus in/out Audio Professionalism + other things to make your PPT-resumé stand out and be noticed

Homework due by November 22 Create a great PPT-resumé for yourself. [worth 90%] Create a second version of your PPT- resumé that breaks many of the rules. [worth 10%] all sorts of “mistakes” like I warned you against This is for fun, but also to make sure you understand what is bad. Email both files (clearly labelled) to me (msherk@ustc.edu.cn)
