Image Computing and Image-guided Interventions IUMA Seminar Series Viernes 12 de septiembre de 2014, 12:00 horas Aula de Teleenseñanza del Edificio de Electrónica y Telecomunicación ABSTRACT Biomedical imaging is a leading force in a new era of personalized medicine where quantitative methods of engineering and systems sciences have a pivotal role in disease detection, diagnostics, and treatment. There are urgent needs to develop image computing methods and software tools in clinical applications. Such quantitative imaging may require the use of multiple imaging modalities that provide anatomical, functional, and molecular information of various diseases. This talk will illustrate the power of multimodality imaging and image-guided interventions (IGI) technology for the diagnosis and therapy of prostate cancer, a disease that affects one in six men. Deformable image registration, automatic image segmentation, computer assisted intervention techniques have been developed and validated for the management of prostate cancer patients at Emory University. By combining multimodality imaging and multidimensional data to exploit our current knowledge of various diseases, this research is to have substantial positive implications for disease detection, diagnosis, and therapy. SPEAKER Dr. Baowei Fei   Associate Professor Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Scholar Director, Quantitative BioImaging Laboratory (QBIL) Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, Emory University School of Medicine Department of Biomedical Engineering, Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology – Georgia Tech Dr. Baowei Fei is a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Scholar and Director of Quantitative BioImaging Laboratory (www.feilab.org) at Emory University School of Medicine and Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Fei received his PhD and Master degrees from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Sciences at Emory University. He is also a faculty member in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Fei has presented internationally and has published widely in medical imaging. He served as an Associate Editor for Medical Physics, an Editorial Board Member for multiple journals including Clinical Medicine Insight – Urology and Advances in Molecular Imaging. He received numerous awards including the Post-doctoral Fellowship Award from the U.S. Department of Defense, the Young Investigator Award from the Society of Nuclear Medicine, and the Outstanding Investigator Award from the Academy of Radiology Research. Dr. Fei has served as a Principal Investigator for multiple NIH grants. He has actively contributed to the medical imaging community and served in various panels including NIH and DOD study sections. .
