Rube Goldberg Project Objective: Build a device that will display a banner in the most inefficient, redundant way possible Constraints: Must fit in a .5m x .5m x .8m box before operation (during operation size is unconstrained) Be assembled in under 1 minute Have a minimum of 5 steps, 4 of which must include concepts we have learned from class Total construction cost must be under 20$ The device must run without any assistance from the engineers once triggered Can not be in action for longer than 2 minutes Must be triggered by another device and also trigger a device Why the Mighty Ducks?

Materials Wood Lever Billiard Ball Spring Cup Funnel PVC String

Start 1)Wooden plank hits ball 2)Ball rolls down pvc pipe 3)Ball hits spring and bounces into the funnel 5)The string attached to the hinge is pulled up causing the sheet, covering the banner, to tear off 4)Hinge weighed down by the ball goes down

Finish

Design and Construction Coming up with a simple, unique yet redundant design with the skill available was very challenging and time-consuming. Construction: Our design changed many times throughout construction Power tools, hammers and screw drivers were all things that most of us were not familiar with – we learned a lot during construction Set backs: Our troubles first began with our materials list; some objects were too heavy, others too expensive On the first trial run the ball kept rolling off of the side of the PVC Fine tuning the spring to project the ball into the funnel with precision every shot

Energy Step 1: Perfectly elastic Collision m1v1 = m1v’1 + m2v’2 Step 2: Conservation of Translational Energy .5mv^2+mgh=.5mv’^2+.5Iw^2 Step 3: Conservation of Energy .5kx^2=.5mv^2 Step 4: Rotational Energy .5mv^2+.5Iw^2=.5mv’^2 Step 5: Perfectly inelastic collision .5mv1^2+mgh=.5Iw^2

Conclusion An open ended problem was solved and our final product is consistently inefficient and redundant Our group learned how to work well together and new friendships were formed A lot of fun was had, engineering concepts and ways of communication were learned
