Audience Analysis Demographics—physical characteristics Psychographics or attitudinal analysis—psychological characteristics

Determine Purpose To inform To persuade To Entertain

Select/Narrow Topic Relevant to: Audience Occasion Speaker

Research Primary—original—interviews, surveys Secondary—existing sources—on line, journals

Develop Central Idea Central idea should be one complete, simple, declarative sentence that tells the audience what the speech is about. White lung is killing people.

Render Main Points Speeches should have at least two main points. Should be equal in time. Should be ordered for effect. Primacy/recency

Outline Two basic types: Key word Full content/full sentence

Rehearse Mirror Video/audio tape For friends Mental: positive visualization
