Lesson 4 – Count, CountIF, V Lookup Spreadsheets Lesson 4 – Count, CountIF, V Lookup

Lesson Objectives To understand COUNT and COUNTIF formulas including where they are used and the difference between them To understand how to use VLOOKUP formulas when searching for data

COUNT Sometimes you may want to count the number of cells that are filled with data. We do this with a COUNT formula =COUNT(A1:A9) This counts all the times a number appears in cells A1 to A9

Highlight the range of cells here COUNT Go to Common K>ICT>Year 7>Spreadsheets > counting Use the COUNT formula to count the number of homeworks each student hand handed in. =COUNT(A1:A9) Highlight the range of cells here

You will need speech marks if your criteria is text COUNTIF Sometimes you might only want to count the number of cells which meet a certain criteria. To do that you use a formula called a COUNT IF =COUNTIF(A1:A9, “H”) This counts how many times a H appears in the cells A1 to A9 You will need speech marks if your criteria is text

COUNTIF In your excel document click on the sheet called countif Students can either be marked with a P, A, M or H This is a school register It would take a very long time to manually count how many Ps there are

COUNTIF You need to use the COUNTIF formula to count how many P’s A’s M’s or H’s for each student. Once you have filled in the top row you can copy the formula down to the bottom. Click the cell and drag the bottom right corner down to the bottom

VLookup Sometimes you might want to pick specific information from a large table of data. You can do this with a VLOOKUP formula. =VLOOKUP(A1,B1:B9,3) Every formula starts with an = This is the cell that you are looking up This is the table that you are looking in This is the column where the result is

VLookup Go to Common K>ICT>Year 7>Spreadsheets>Vlookup Countif

Extension If you have finished, practice your graph making skills
