Changing Conversations: What matters to you? Huw Davies September 2016 1 of 92
Wellbeing: What does it mean? WHO defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and Social Well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In “the act” the wellbeing principle is defined as “I know and understand what care, support and opportunities are available to me and I get the help I need, which I need it, in the way I want it.”
Wellbeing How important is the concept of wellbeing? To advocates To citizens To statutory services
Pillars of “the Act”. The five core principles of the Act are: Voice and control – putting the individual and their needs, at the centre of their care, and giving them a voice in, and control over reaching the outcomes that help them achieve well-being Prevention and early intervention – increasing preventative services within the community to minimise the escalation of critical need Well-being – supporting people to achieve their own well-being and measuring the success of care and support Co-production – encouraging individuals to become more involved in the design and delivery of services Multi-agency working and co-operation
What does this remind you of?
Good Ol’ Maslow...
Conclusions: SSWB is not simply a new set of laws SSWB is a change in culture, from Deficit (what can’t you do) to Assets (what can you do) Good advocacy practice has always been about the positive not the negative. Now we have to bring this change to everyone It isn’t a simple change, that’s why its called culture change By being able to articulate clients desires in terms of wellbeing then we are leading the way, and supporting citizens to fully engage in the process
