Registration Where to pay the student union membership fee? Cash at any of the local banks – Osuuspankki, Itsenäisyydenkatu 11, opening hours: 10:00 – 16:30 - please note that you will need an ID (passport or an ID card valid in the Schengen area) From your own bank account using online banking – remember to print out a receipt!

Banking services Do I need to open a bank account? In most cases, it is not necessary You can pay the Student Union fee and your monthly rent to TOAS from your own bank account in your home country – within SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) no additional fees for transfers Also the TOAS deposit will be refunded to your bank account in your home country You can withdraw money with any cards with Visa and MasterCard logos using the OTTO cash machines/ATMs

Banking services When do I need to open a bank account? If you stay in Finland for longer than a year If you come from outside the SEPA area (28 EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland & Monaco) and will not manage with the banking services provided by your home country If you receive regular payments (grants, salary, etc.) that are paid only to a Finnish bank account

Banking services If you want to open a bank account You should make an appointment e.g. at Osuuspankki, by contacting them via their online service

Student card can be collected in about three weeks from the Student Union TAMY, address: Yliopistonkatu 60 A costs 5 euros and it has to be paid in cash you need to have an identification card (with your photo on it) or a passport with you functions as a key card to the computer classrooms at the University and as a library card in the main university library

Student card After registration, the Student Certicate from the Registrars Office entitles you to the discounts e.g. in the university cafeterias before you obtain your student card If you intend to travel by train before you get your student card -> please pick up a copy of Certification for Acquisition of Student Card for the Finnish National Railways, in order to get the 50 per cent student discount on train fares

Computer classrooms Before you obtain your student card, you can use the following computer class rooms: Computer lab ML5 (main building, D-wing downstairs) Opening hours during the Orientation Course Thu and Fri The following user name and password are required for logging onto the computers in computer lab ML5 user name: mlkur133 password: BaUA5CLg Computer lab ML10 (main building, 2nd floor) open without student card you need your BUA for ML10

Travel card for local buses Frenckell Service Point Frenckellinaukio 2 B, ground floor Opening hours Mon-Fri 8:30 – 15:45 Ticket fares Age group 12 – 24 years: youth ticket – no student certificate required Over 25 years – only those who have a Finnish social security number will receive a student ticket -> Please go to the local Register Office (Maistraatti, Hatanpään valtatie 24), in order to get a social security number -> EU citizens will need to register their residence in Finland at the local police department first

Notification of change of address This form is used to inform the Post Office of your current residence so that your mail is delivered correctly Please fill in the form and drop the envelope in any postbox

Residence permit Non-EU citizens have applied for a residence permit already before entering Finland EU citizens and citizens of Liechtenstein and Switzerland must register their residence after staying three months in Finland Form Registration of right of residence Enclosures required: copy of travel document (original required) letter of attendance from educational institution statement of funds fee: 47

Residence permit EU citizens register their residence at the local police station, Sorinkatu 12 You can make an appointment online at Nordic citizens must register their residence if they stay in Finland longer than six months – this is done at a Registrar Office (Maistraatti)
