WGISS/WGCV Joint Session Status - Greg Stensaas, USGS (WGCV) Robert Woodcock, CSIRO, (WGISS) WGCV Plenary # 44 EUMETSAT, Darmstadt, Germany August 30, 2018

WGISS/WGCV Joint Session – Topics discussed Four broad topics summarized and discussed leading to a set of concrete tasks Data Formats and Interoperability in the framework of FDA Robert Woodcock (WGISS), Medhavy Thankappan (WGCV) Quality Indicators in Discovery Metadata Michael Morahan (WGISS), Nigel Fox (WGCV) CEOS Data Cubes and CEOS Test Sites Data Access in support of WGCV Activities Robert Woodcock (WGISS), Greg Stensaas (WGCV) Standardization and Best Practices (e.g. ISO 19159-3) Richard Moreno (WGISS), Cindy Ong (WGCV)

Need a way to get those data more available to users CEOS Data Cubes and CEOS Test Sites Data Access in support to WGCV Activities Objective: Data Cubes (or similar stacking of data over time for specific locations) test cases Exist a range of data sets already available through the cal/val portal such as Landnet; plus QA4EO activities; and LPCS  Need a way to get those data more available to users Recommendation – Focus on IVOS and LPV and key GEO applications including obtaining data over key test sites (WGCV) and pushing this process to CEOS SIT/LSI VC/WGCV/WGISS  Also need to simplify the problem from a WGISS hat and concentrate on analyzable and get an on-demand analytics environment to do what users want   Task: LPV supersite data access test case: LPV supersites are a good test case related to validation with a broad user community. Objective is to provide an improved user access to the LPV supersite data sets coupled with analytics tools to provide improved results for the users

Data can be pursued over test site via IDN and CWIC Test site catalog list - Note using work being developed for Land Product Characterization Systems (LPCS) Used LPV site list CEOS test site list NEON test sites Need to get new sites added New RadCalNet New Australia sites https://lta.cr.usgs.gov/Calibration_Validation_Test_Sites Test site catalog Cal/val portal – http://calvalportal.ceos.org/ USGS – test site catalog -

WGISS/WGCV Joint Session - Past Actions Action open on us during last WGISS-WGCV Joint meeting: "Iolanda Maggio, ESA and Greg Stensaas, USGS to review actions from 2016 and reformulate as needed" Action WGISS-41-02: In order to support, with WGCV, Metadata Requirements for Quality (Quality fields), Andy Mitchell to confirm with Albrecht if these are activities WGISS should pursue: Action WGISS-41-02a: Review and comment on GEOSS Data Quality Requirements (DDQ -Documentation on Data Quality) Action WGISS-41-02b: Include validation metrics (possibly calibration metrics and sensor performance indicator). Include the reference to validation guidelines into the metadata information. Action WGISS-41-02c: Develop a White Paper on Recommendations for improving Data Quality in Metadata. Action WGISS-41-03: Andy Mitchell to confirm with Albrecht the possibility to work with WGCV to develop Best Practices on Data Reprocessing – including current and future practices (i.e. on-demand ARD Processing). Greg response: The actions are all good and important, especially as we are pursing CARD4L and MRI, but maybe a little stale. The QA4EO, ARD and MRI need is where the intent for these actions came from. Many of these could be done by enhancing technical reference and processes related to the current ARD specification. Maybe, there really needs to be an ARD/MRI, WGCV IVOS and LPV, WGISS team to bring some of these together; then we could close these to a new action (that includes the intent of these actions) related to support for ARD and MRI. Work these prior to WGISS 46 meeting, Oberpfaffenhofen (near Munich), Germany, 22-25 October

Summary Test sites can all be put into IDN without impact Add any new test sites to the list Provide current list in excel and add to it Mostly VNIR/SWIR/Thermal; need help for SAR, MW, …, Need to establish and update key test sites for the future Define labels and definition Move some to historical? Need WGCV collection recommendation to CEOS and GEO Work with WGISS and agency tools to help with assessment process Integration of tools like MEA GUI LPCS – subset, reformat, and comparison tools https://landsat.usgs.gov/lpcs

CEOS Data Cubes and CEOS Test Sites Data Access in support to WGCV Activities Robert.Woodcock@csiro.au Aug 12 to michael.p.mora., me, Medhavy.Thanka. Hi Michael and Greg Medhavy and I have been following up on our sub-actions for WGCV-03 CEOS Data Cubes and CEOS Test Sites Data Access in support to WGCV Activities. We are investigating how to setup a Data Cube environment for Cal/Val using the test site data (satellite and insitu). My notes say you guys were working on the IDN and cal/val catalogue updates to provide access to this data. I’m still on a learning curve on those services but I wanted to check on your progress and perhaps enlist your assistance in getting the design and potentially an implementation running for our Cal/Val Data Cube environment? Could you point me towards the appropriate documentation, and any python code you might have that can retrieve the data? I’ll be writing up the use-case and design Medhavy and I have in mind for the Cal/Val data cube, mostly a python notebook with the appropriate boilerplate code for the queries already written up for people to tweak as necessary. I have identified the all cal sites (to include a new ISRO site and a new GSA site). I need to add some new val sites from the LPV subgroup. Then I can work with you and John (if John can help me) to get them in the system. Greg On Mon, Jun 4, 2018 at 5:41 AM, Morahan, Michael P.
