SPS5. Students will compare and contrast the phases of matter as they relate to atomic and molecular motion. a. Investigate molecular motion as it relates to thermal energy changes in terms of conduction, convection, and radiation c. Determine the heat capacity of a substance using mass, specific heat, and temperature. d. Explain the flow of energy in phase changes through the use of a phase diagram

Background You own an ice cream vending cart and want to provide concessions at the Braves’ new Suntrust Park. Due to the smaller size of the new stadium, fewer vendors are contracted to sell concessions inside the stadium. You have decided to apply to SunTrust Park to be a vendor outside the stadium to sell your ice cream.

Problem You have decided to provide a unique free giveaway with every ice cream cup purchased….an ice cream coozie! The ice cream coozie will keep the customer’s hand from freezing, and the ice cream from melting. You also want to promote the Braves with graphics on the outside. You need to plan, design, test and implement a prototype of three coozies made of different materials.

Solution 1. Design, plan and build a prototype of the coozies: Has no more than a 5 degree temperature increase in 30 minutes in direct sunlight Is made of recycled materials (found around your home…no new purchases) This is to keep your startup costs down. 2. You will submit your prototypes and a Vendor Application to the head of Suntrust Park Concessions for approval. Include the following: Your design proposal and prototypes Convincing argument on which coozie is best Data that shows the effectiveness of your design Depiction of phase changes from a particle perspective and how the design prevents/slows heat transfer
