SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER 1 Peter 5:5

Submission Submit – to yield oneself, or to be placed under the orders or directives of another. Be obedient to. A military term meaning to rank under. Luke 10:17 1 Corinthians 15:27-28

Submission in scripture Christians to government – subjecting to the authorities Romans 13:1 & 5, to governing authorities Titus 3:1, subject to rulers and authorities 1 Peter 2:13, to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake cf. Acts 4:18-20, 5:29 – we ought to obey God rather than men

Submission in scripture Employees to employers – servant/master application Titus 2:9-10 be obedient – showing good fidelity 1 Peter 2:18, even the harsh Colossians 4:1, Ephesians 6:9 masters (employers) are to treat workers with repsect

Submission in scripture Children to parents – obey and honor Ephesians 6:1-2, obey and honor cf. Luke 2:51, Jesus to His parents Colossians 3:21, Ephesians 6:4, fathers and mothers to train and be good to them. Cf. 1 Timothy 5:8

Submit to one another Submit to the elders – Hebrews 13:17, they watch out for your souls 1 Peter 5:2-3, elders lead by example and as “pastors” (shepherds) – it is about serving

Submit to one another Submit to such – 1 Corinthians 16:16, describing those who have devoted themselves to the ministry of the saints. To everyone who labors with us

Submit to one another Submit to the elderly – 1 Peter 5:5, younger to respect elders. Leviticus 19:32, 1 Timothy 5:1-2, older men as fathers, older women as mothers Woefully needed The elderly should not despise youth – 1 Timothy 5:12, cf. 1 Cor. 16:10-11

Submit to one another In worship – order in worship is expected Colossians 3:16, 1 Corinthians 14:34 29-30, 40, God is not the author of confusion! 1 Corinthians 11:33, wait for one another

How do we Submit to one another In the fear of God – reverence! Ephesians 5:21 James 4:7, submit to God cf. Hebrews 12:9, we subject to earthly fathers Romans 10:3 – some did not submit to the righteousness of God

How do we Submit to one another Unto God – for His sake! Colossians 3:18, as is fitting 1 Peter 2:13, “For the Lord’s sake.” Are we thinking about God in our conduct with others?

How do we Submit to one another As the church is subject to Christ– Ephesians 5:24, we submit to Jesus and His instructions

How do we Submit to one another It is mutual – 1 Peter 5:5, “one another” – reciprocal! Willingly – submission should not be a drudgery. We gladly submit – cf. 2 Corinthians 12:15 Romans 13:5, for conscience sake

How do we Submit to one another With respect – the premise of submission! cf. Galatians 3:27-28 Hebrews 12:9, submit to God as we did to our earthly fathers and paid them respect

How do we Submit to one another With humility – required for submission 1 Peter 5:5-6, how we submit to one another James 4:6, God resists the proud, gives grace to the humble

How do we Submit to one another With love – in all we do Romans 12:10-11, 1 Peter 1:22 brotherly love moves us to care and act in the best interest of each other. Philippians 2:3-4, 1 Corinthians 16:14, let all that you do be done with love

Am I submitting to my brethren? Am I Submitting to God?
