There’s A Giant in My House! ©Janet Johnson 2013

Raise your hand to describe what you see. Painting by N.C. Wyeth.

What do you think is happening in this painting?

What do you think might happen next?

This is a painting done by the artist N.C.Wyeth. The original idea for the painting was about children using their imaginations and finding imaginary shapes of things in the clouds.

This was an illustration done for the story, “Jack and the Beanstalk.” How does the giant fit in the room compared to the other things in the room? Does the giant look comfortable standing in this room? This illustration is in the public domain. See the info. here at Wikimedia: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jack_and_the_Beanstalk_Giant_-_Project_Gutenberg_eText_17034.jpg From The Project Gutenberg eBook, English Fairy Tales (1918), by Flora Annie Steel, Illustrated by Arthur Rackham http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/17034 The Giant smells Jack

illustration of a giant by N.C. Wyeth. How big is this Here is a illustration of a giant by N.C. Wyeth. How big is this giant compared to the things around him? Painting by N.C. Wyeth

Today you are going to draw your own idea of a giant. Will it be a boy or a girl giant? Will it be a family of giants?

Will you show them squished inside a house? ©Janet Johnson 2013

Will your drawing take place outside or inside? Will it be from a story you know or one you imagine? ©Janet Johnson 2013

Will you show them playing with normal sized people? ©Janet Johnson 2013

For your drawing today you will need these things: Paper 2. Pencil to Supplies from your art box 2. Pencil to draw with 3. Crayons or Markers to color with ©Janet Johnson 2013

You may turn your paper horizontal or vertical to best fit what you will be drawing. ©Janet Johnson 2013 First write your name and room number in the corner of your paper.

Remember to make your drawing as big as your paper. Color your work in neatly. Don’t forget to color the background.

More Ideas for your drawing: Will your drawing be about long ago or today? Will there be other imaginary characters there? What is your giant doing? Are they trying to do the same sorts of things we do everyday but in a tiny space? Are they working, playing or resting? What kinds of clothes will they wear? What sort of things will be around them? Are there other giants around? Are there normal sized people around? What are those people doing? Are they afraid or happy? ©Janet Johnson 2013
