Threlkeld Community Coffee Shop Community Interest Company Update for Village Hall Trust AGM 11 January 2018 Adam Bazire - Chairman

Agenda Introduction Activities Money

Background We are wholly owned by the Village Hall Trust The business is run on an “arm’s length” basis Separate Board of Directors, but close working relationship Avoids conflicts between Charitable and Commercial aims All profit is returned to the Trust In addition, we can support local community organisations and projects The Coffee Shop’s legal structure is a “Community Interest Company”. We give preference to local people for employment We give preference to local suppliers where possible We have a commitment to using “Fair Trade” produce

People Key staff Board of Directors Johnny Denny – Coffee Shop Manager Eduard Szasz – Senior Barista One Salaried Barista and four Flexible Baristas Board of Directors Adam Bazire – Chairman Stephen Harris – Finance Director Debbie Hutton – Marketing Director Elaine Jordan – HR Director (notice submitted) Situation vacant – new director(s)

2017 Activities The focus of the year has been on getting a stable team of good staff Johnny started as Manager in May Eduard was promoted to Senior Barista in July Still living with the consequences of Storm Desmond The loss of business form the destruction of the railway path has been significant Promotional activities have raised income a little during 2017 over 2016 However, it remains a competitive environment with many good coffee shops in the locality Especially Lingholm……

Planning request Planning permission has been requested for the field behind the Coffee Shop

Is this our future?

(Note: financial year end is 31 March) Financial results FY2017 (Note: financial year end is 31 March)

Storm Desmond Revenue declined from £140,801 in the year ended 31 March 2016 to £126,853 in FY2017 Down 11% year on year, and down 22% on budget as revenue growth had been expected Given typical 26% cost of materials, Storm Desmond is directly responsible for £10,324 off the bottom line in 2017. Desmond

Results Note In addition, Coffee Shop pays £12,672 to Village Hall for use of the facility covering rent, rates, heating, lighting, waste, general maintenance. 2018 financial year to date is a little ahead of 2017, but still well behind 2016 Storm Desmond continues to have a big effect on us.

Conclusion Finances continue to be tight, compared to the “pre Storm Desmond” days. Nevertheless, the Coffee Shop will provide a significant contribution to the Village Hall Trust over the coming years from on-going profit, CCF Grant and historical reserves The planning request represents a threat to our financial viability Thank you, again, to our staff Recruiting directors….
