Operation Torch November 8-12, 1942 Nick Colletti and Josh Meck

Events Prior to Operation Torch The Vichy French and Germany occupied Northern African coast. The Vichy French was the French government that supported Nazism. The Vichy French used Northern Africa to supply the Axis Powers with raw materials.

Events Prior to Operation Torch American commanders agreed to conduct the invasion of Northwestern Africa with the goal of clearing the Axis troops and preparing the way for a future attack on Southern Europe. Since the French were once on the Allies side, it was hoped that they would not fire on British and American troops during invasion. The three main landings were Casablanca, Oran, and Algiers.

Casablanca On November 8, 1942 the Western Task Force invades Morocco at Casablanca. This was the first invasion that the United States participated in. 35,000 men Pushed French forces back into the city and forced to surrender on November 10.

Oran The Central Task Force landed on the shore of Algeria on November 8. 18,500 men Meet fierce French forces and after a full day of fighting the French surrendered.

Algiers On November 8, the Eastern Task Force landed on the shores at Algiers in Algeria. The Eastern Task Force was made up of one American and four British units. Because of a coup by French forces, the Eastern Task Force was met with little to no opposition. The same day the Eastern Task Force surronded Algiers and forced the French to surrender.

Losses Sustained Allies 480 dead 720 wounded Vichy French 1,346 dead

Outcome and Impact Allies Victory They captured key French positions stopping the shipment of goods to German from Africa. This victory also allowed for a future Ally attack on Southern Europe.
