RI3/RL3 Summarizing Be Concise, Be Clear

The Target I can write all the elements of a 3 while using 3+ rhetorical verbs. I can write a concise summary giving identifying information, the claim/theme, and supporting details/quotes in an organized manner, using transitions and following the structure of the original text. I can write a summary answering who, what, when, where, and why. I can write a summary with too little or too much information.

Breaking It Down Identifying Information = author, title of work, year of publication (aka citation) Give claims/themes and details in order of appearance in the text Glue it all together with rhetorical verbs

Example Summary: We Wear the Mask By Paul Laurence Dunbar , 1896 We wear the mask that grins and lies, It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,— This debt we pay to human guile; With torn and bleeding hearts we smile, And mouth with myriad subtleties. Why should the world be over-wise, In counting all our tears and sighs? Nay, let them only see us, while        We wear the mask. We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries To thee from tortured souls arise. We sing, but oh the clay is vile Beneath our feet, and long the mile; But let the world dream otherwise,        We wear the mask! Summary:
