Online Public Access Catalog The OPAC provides different searches or modes of accessing books. These searches includes the option of typing in the author’s last name (if known), the title of the book (if known), a keyword, or a subject search. For Example, Pirates of the Caribbean Seas by David Thomas may be looked up by the following methods: Choosing author and typing in Thomas, David or just Thomas Choosing title and typing out the title Pirates of the Caribbean Seas Type in the subject pirates Type in the keyword pirates which in this case happens to be the same as the subject

Glossary of Library Terms to Know Bar Code: the series of black lines on a white label which identify the unique number of all materials (like UPC symbol) Call Number: the Dewey decimal number/letter combination on the spine of the book (spine label) Circulation: the process of checking materials in or out of the library – ours is by a company called Follett Dewey Decimal System: the way the library materials are organized into ten basic categories

Fiction: novels and short stories arranged in order by the first three letters of the author’s last name Non-Fiction: books of factual information arranged in the Dewey Decimal System Patron: any user of the library, such as a student or teacher Reference: the section where encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs and other quick-answer resources are located; reference materials may not be checked out

Computer Use in the Library The internet is for school related use only. Doing personal work such as email, chat rooms, maintaining your own web site, games, music, etc. is not appropriate at school because of the limited number of computers available for library research. Typing and printing papers is allowed. You can use a floppy disc to save documents or save to your folder on the student server. Floppy discs are on sale for $1.00 at the front counter. Printing costs $0.10 per page. Pick p your printing at the front library counter. When you are done, log off. Go to the start button and select log off. Then bring the computer card back to the front counter. If you are in the library with your teacher using the computer for a class project, the teacher will supervise you. You do not need to “check out” a computer from the librarian. Library staff will accept up to 3 students to use computers during a school day; without teacher supervision. Middle school and High school faculty members are requested to schedule their classes to come to the library to use the computers to complete assignments throughout the year.

How To Log On To Computers To log into computers, you need a student login name and a student ID. For most students, the student login name is your First Initial followed by the First FIVE letters of your last name followed by a 1. For some students, the number at the end may be a 2,3,4,etc. For example: John Smith would probably be jsmith1.But might be jsmith2,jsmith3 etc. Elizabeth Spenger would probably be espeng1. Note there are no spaces in the login name . Your password is your student Id number. When you log in you have access to a student folder that has the same name as your login name.Saving to this folder allows you to retrieve this information from anywhere on campus. The space is limited so you may need to delete unused documents from time to time (you can copy them to a disk if you like ). All files will be deleted at the end of the school year.

Saving To A Student Folder When you log in, you have access to a student folder that has the same name as your login name. Saving to this folder allows you to retrieve this information from anywhere on campus. The space is limited so you may need to delete unused documents from time to time. Care and Maintenance of Textbooks Textbooks should be covered at all times. It protects the cover and extends the life of the book. Excessive damages to book will result in a fine. Do not tape your book covers to the books. This damages the book and will result in a fine. Please write your name in the designated area only. Do not deface, write in or on the books. Write the title & barcode numbers of your books in a binder or another area for your reference in case of misplaced books. Be careful placing food and/or drinks in your backpack with your books. If you drop or change a class, or are no longer using the book, return it to the library to clear your record. Do not give it to your teacher or leave it in the classroom.
