Over the next few lessons we are going to watch The Time Machine, which is based on novel by H.G. Wells (published in 1895). While watching, you should consider the impression we are given of the people who live in the future. What are they like? Are we meant to like them or dislike them?

After viewing discussion… Remember that Wells wrote his novel in 1894. What advantages would there be for setting a story so far in the future?

TASK As a group, let’s read through Wells’ descriptions of the Eloi and the Morlocks. How does Wells describe them? What impressions do we get of these futuristic people?

TASK Half the class will use the extract describing the Eloi, while the other half of the class will focus on the Morlocks. Using your extract, write a P.E.E. paragraph that answers the following question: What impression does Wells give of these futuristic people? P: The impression Wells gives of the (Eloi/Morlocks) in this passage is that… E: For example, he describes how ‘….’ E: This shows that…because,

Give them a mark out of four using the following criteria: Swap your work with someone who focused on the other extract (you should not be reading a paragraph about the extract you explored). Give them a mark out of four using the following criteria: They start with a clear statement which answers the question They have used well chosen sections (quotes) from the extract that support their point. They are able to explain how their quote(s) reinforce their point in a clear and logical way. Their explanation is not a simple repeat of their point; they may choose to make use of the word ‘because’ to push their response further. Please provide one positive sentence about the paragraph and suggest one tip for improvement.

Plenary Which blob are you? When you get your paragraph back, consider your mark and the comments you received. Write a sentence on how you can improve your writing for next time. Which blob are you?
