Over the next few lessons we are going to watch The Time Machine, which is based on novel by H.G. Wells (published in 1895). While watching, you should consider the impression we are given of the people who live in the future. What are they like? Are we meant to like them or dislike them?

After viewing discussion… Remember that Wells wrote his novel in 1894. What advantages would there be for setting a story so far in the future?

TASK As a group, let’s read through Wells’ descriptions of the Eloi and the Morlocks. How does Wells describe them? What impressions do we get of these futuristic people?

TASK Half the class will use the extract describing the Eloi, while the other half of the class will focus on the Morlocks. Using your extract, write a P.E.E. paragraph that answers the following question: What impression does Wells give of these futuristic people?
