CIDs 73, 74 September 2007 CID 73 74 Comment Proposed Change The following comment was made in LB84: "The TG has not adequately identified what intellectual property is contained within the TGn Draft. The draft contains identified IP for techniques for which no LOA has been submitted. The problems wrt to IP are further explained in document 06/579 submitted to the 802.11 document server. Paper 06/579 is hereby incorporated by reference as part of this comment. Please see the document for further explanation." During processing of LB84 comments the TG essentially referred the issues raised by my comment for handling by Patcom. Unfortunately, it has been a year since LB84 and none of the IEEE IP procedures have changed as of the time of LB97. Therefore all of the problems identified in 06/579 remain and I can not vote to approve this draft. Clearly, precisely and unambiguously identify all IP contained in the TGn drat and explicitly characterize it as essential or non-essential; remove the use of all essential patented material from the draft (or confirm free licenses for essential patented material). 74 The commenter is of the opinion that the TGn draft includes essential patented material covered by US patent # 5,487,069. Since LB84 there has been legal activity and court decisions regarding this patent which cause the commenter to believe that the patent holders fully intend to require significant licensing fees from TGn implementers (and have already demanded this in at least one instance). The Patent holder has no LOA on file with IEEE for TGn (there is a very early LOA on file from many years before TGn existed, however this is not applicable to TGn activity - see doc 06/579 for more explanation). Therefore, the commenter believes that the TGn draft is in violation of IEEE rules as it includes essential patented material for which there is no LOA on file. FYI - The commenter has personal knowledge of the royalty levels that the patent holder has requested for the use of this patent; however current IEEE rules and NDAs prevent the commenter from discussing the amounts further as part of this LB comment; suffice it to say that the commenter does not believe that the amounts he is aware of would be classified as "reasonable". Remove the use of the identified patented material; or alternatively, this commuter would accept a legally binding guarantee from the patent holder that they either will not enforce the patent for 802.11 or that the royalty rate is $0 for 802.11 usage. (However, under the current IEEE process rules the commenter does not see how TGn can have that conversation with the patent holder.) Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al

CIDs 73, 74 Proposed Resolutions September 2007 CIDs 73, 74 Proposed Resolutions Counter TGn believes it and the 802.11 WG have faithfully followed the procedures provided by PatCom concerning the soliciting of the existence of potentially essential patents and associated LOAs as specified in: http://standards.ieee.org/board/pat/pat-slideset.ppt TGn is restricted from any additional action beyond these procedures. TGn has passed this comment on to PatCom for review. Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al

CID 27 "non-HT duplicate frame" or "NON_HT_CBW40" September 2007 CID 27 CID Comment Proposed Change 27 "non-HT duplicate frame" or "NON_HT_CBW40" Unify the expression. Proposed Resolution: Counter. The term “NON_HT_CBW40” should be replaced with the term “non-HT duplicate frame” where it occurs in clause 9 of the draft. The term “NON_HT_CBW40” should not be removed or replaced where it occurs in clause 3 or 20. Resolution: TGn Editor: Make the following change : Replace the term “NON_HT_CBW40” with the term “non-HT duplicate frame” where it occurs in clause 9 of the draft. Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al

CID 944 introduction is needed add introduction September 2007 CID 944 CID Comment Proposed Change 944 introduction is needed add introduction Proposed Resolution: Counter. TGn Editor: Insert the following paragraph on page iii of Draft 2.07 just below the text that now reads: This amendment specifies enhancements to 802.11 PHY and MAC layers to provide modes of operation with useful data rates substantially higher than those previously available. Significantly higher 802.11 wireless local area network (LAN) throughput is expected to improve user experiences for current applications and to enable new applications and market segments. Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al

September 2007 CID 808 CID Comment Proposed Change 808 This draft introduces many terms new to 802.11. Many of the terms used are not defined here or elsewhere. Provide definitions for "beamforming", "sounding", "steering", "space-time streams", "greenfield", etc. Editor needs to review draft to locate other terms which require definition in clause 3. TGn needs to correctly define all new terms. Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al

CID 808 September 2007 Proposed Resolution: Counter. doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/2457r2 September 2007 CID 808 Proposed Resolution: Counter. TGn Editor: Insert the following definitions into the appropriate location in clause 3. Beamforming : Beamforming or beam steering is a spatial filtering mechanism used at a transmitter to improve the received signal power or signal-to-noise ratio at an intended receiver.  Sounding: Sounding refers to the use of preamble training fields to measure the channel for purposes other than demodulation of the Data portion of the PPDU containing the training fields.  These uses include calculation of transmit steering, calculation of recommended MCS, and calculation of calibration parameters.  Space-time streams: Space-time streams are streams of modulation symbols created by applying a combination of spatial and temporal  processing to one or more spatial streams of modulation symbols. Greenfield format: Greenfield defines an optional frame format used between HT devices in a BSS when there are no non-HT devices associated. September 2007 CID 1704 CID Comment Proposed Change 1704 Table T1 has several problems. Layers are confusing. It seems to me that the columns (2, 3) corresponding to the settings in OBSS are the input and the settings in columns (4, 5) and (6, 7) are the possible settings by the AP. Where is the case where the columns (2, 3) are no known. I assume that is the same as (0, 0). How does an AP know if it is under condition 1d or 2a, 2b, 2c? Isn't 3, the same as 1a, 1b or 1c or Unknown? What is the meaning of Layer 3 in the last row? While I think the table is useful, it would be better if it provided possible settings that an AP might use to accomplish protection, given what it observes from OBSS AP. A simpler table would be a lot more likely to be useful, certainly given that it is in an informative annex that can be ignored otherwise. Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al

September 2007 CID 1704 discussion This table can not be updated fully until COEX finishes their work. Coordinate with COEX to insure the necessary changes to this table are made. Assigned to J. Levy to coordinate. Note currently Table R.1 as Annex T is now Annex R in 2.02. Proposed resolution: Transfer to COEX since resolution of this CID is dependent upon other COEX resolutions. Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al

September 2007 CID 3403 CID Comment Proposed Change 3403 Given the time current official time lines for the current ongoing amendments, it appears that TGr will be completed prior to TGn. If this correct a review and assessment of the impact of TGr on TGn needs to be done and required changes made. Proposed Resolution: Counter. It is recognized that TGr is expected to publish prior to TGn. TGn has investigated the implications of TGr. Therefore, there are no changes required to the TGn draft. Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al

September 2007 CID 519 CID Comment Proposed Change 519 The SYNTAX is integer with values of 1, 2, & 3. However the Description does not state the encodings for the 400 microseconds, 1500 microseconds, or 5000 microseconds Add coding. That is associate values 1, 2, & 3 with the three enumerated attributes. Proposed Resolution: Counter. The issue raised in the comment has been addressed by the corrections made to satisfy CID 905; D2.07 contains appropriately amended text as. No further action is required. Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al

September 2007 CID 1482 CID Comment Proposed Change 1482 "…much higher…" : use of a comparitive statement without providing a context for the comparision" Delete this definition. And then, replace "HT frame" with "HT PPDU" and replace "non-HT frame" with "non-HT PPDU" in the document. Discussion: All instances of non-HT frame have been removed. One instance of “HT frame” remains in D2.07 occurring in clause 9.13.1, page 132, line 13. Recycled as an EMR with the following note from the editor: There's a single remaining "HT-frame" on p130 D2.06. Please consider whether this also should be replaced, e.g. such as: "These mechanisms are used to insure that non-ERP STAs do not interfere with frame exchanges using ERP PPDUs between ERP STAs and that non-HT STA do not interfere with frame exchanges using HT PPDUs between HT STAs. Thereby, allowing non-ERP and/or non-HT STAs to coexist with ERP and/or HT STAs.“ Proposed Resolution: Accept instructions from the editor as contained in “editor notes” field for CID 1482 changing the text to read: “These mechanisms are used to insure that non-ERP STAs do not interfere with frame exchanges using ERP PPDUs between ERP STAs and that non-HT STA do not interfere with frame exchanges using HT PPDUs between HT STAs. Thereby, allowing non-ERP and/or non-HT STAs to coexist with ERP and/or HT STAs.” Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al

September 2007 CID 77 CID Comment Proposed Change 77 "…much higher…" : use of a comparitive statement without providing a context for the comparision" Change to "..modes of operation are enabled that support lower limits of maximum thruoghput that start at 100 Mb/s .." This CID was sent to General as an EMR. Proposed Resolution: Text has was properly modified in D2.07 as per CID 1975. No further action required by General ad hoc. Transfer to editor. Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al

CID 2803 The spec is too short and too dull. September 2007 CID 2803 CID Comment Proposed Change 2803 The spec is too short and too dull. Add more humo(u)r, an easter-egg or two and make it longer.I propose this comment be assigned to each ad-hoc in turn to make the necessary adjustments. Proposed Resolution: Counter. TGn has decided to shorten the draft text by 2 pages and to remove anything that would be considered interesting to all but the most dedicated reader. Perhaps a way will be discovered in the future to create a draft that will be considered sufficiently long and interesting. Bruce Kraemer, Marvell, et al
