Flame Test Lab By Henry Hodaly

This will produce a green flame. Copper (II) Nitrate This will produce a green flame.

This will produce a red flame. Strontium Nitrate This will produce a red flame.

This will produce a dark orange flame. Lithium Nitrate This will produce a dark orange flame.

This will produce a light orange flame. Potassium Nitrate This will produce a light orange flame.

This will produce a pink flame. Calcium Nitrate This will produce a pink flame.

The picture for Sodium Nitrate is just a regular orange flame.

Explanation The reason why we are able to see different colours when we heat different ions is because the electrons of these ions get excited, and then they jump up, so the element is an excited state. As the energy levels decrease, the electrons fall back down and emit photons of light that we are able to see. These photons of light are the different colours.
