I believe that if you give a child a fish, he/she eats for a day, but if you teach a child to fish, he/she eats for a lifetime! THEREFORE, there will be lots of fishing going on in Room 1.135.

HOMEWORK POLICY Homework is for practice. Fifth grade students should not spend more than 50 minutes per night completing homework. It is assigned nightly, with the exceptions of weekends and holidays, unless there is an at home project. (i.e. science project, book report, research) Homework is ALWAYS to be written in agenda for that night’s assignments. Reading is required 5 nights a week for at least 20 minutes. I understand life gets hectic, so if there is a night students can’t read, they need to compensate for that 20 minutes throughout the week. Students are not required to read over the weekend, but it is HIGHLY encouraged! Why Read?

Brief Overview of Subjects Reading: I will expose your child o a variety of literary genres. My hope is that they will learn to love reading and want to improve their fluency and comprehension. They will learn to cite evidence from the text, become deep thinkers, and read closely for author’s meaning. Language Arts/Spelling: English skills for speaking and writing, Writing skills- opinion, informative, narrative, and response to literature. Spelling and Vocabulary will be in journals (Spelling City will be used for practice.) Math Units: Operations and Algebraic Thinking (Order of Operations) Numbers in Base Ten (place value, multiplication, division, and decimals) Fractions (all operations) Measurement and Data Geometry

Brief Overview of Subjects Social Studies Units: U.S. Government, Civil War/Reconstruction, Immigration & Industry, WWI, The Great Depression, WWII, and Post WWII (Ms. Largent teaches) Science Units: Constructive and Destructive Forces, Electricity & Magnetism, Matter, Cells and Microorganisms, Classification of Organisms, Inherited and Learned Behaviors Health Units: Alcohol, Tobacco & other drugs, Disease Prevention, Family Living, Growth & Development, Nutrition, Personal Health, Guidance

ParentVue is available for online access to your child’s grades. GRADING SCALE 100%-90% =A 89%-80% =B 79%-74% =C 73%-70% =D 69% OR below =F Progress Reports are sent home after 4 ½ weeks. Keep in mind, students will still have approximately 4 more weeks to accumulate grades after the midpoint. ParentVue is available for online access to your child’s grades.

Odds and Ends Lunch -$2.35 Breakfast - $1.50 Please join PTA! When filling out the white envelopes for money, please do not write in the “Office Only Use” box on the right hand side. No coins accepted. No change given. Transportation changes are not accepted via email, phone, text, etc. All changes must be in writing and delivered to the office by 1:45pm.

After 2:45, students/parents cannot return to the classrooms  From Mrs. Bowen: Car Riders vs. Walkers (please do not park and walk in to get your children, please use the car line if you are driving to pick up your students) Walkers will now gather on the Kindergarten playground in the afternoons Please do not drive into the bus port to drop off students in the mornings (walkers are fine) After 2:45, students/parents cannot return to the classrooms Boosterthon Fun Run is August 16th during specials Fall Pictures are August 17th.

Blue Ridge OVERNIGHT Field Trip My class is going Oct. 25th – 27th If you are interested in chaperoning, you MUST attend the meeting on September 12th! $85- Due August 31, 2016 $45*- Due September 15, 2016 $45*- Due October 7, 2016 * Amount may increase if third bus has to be added Washington D.C.
