Author’s Purpose: Question 1 Read the first two paragraphs, what do these paragraphs reveal about the author’s purpose? Cite details that helped you come to that conclusion.

Question 2 Reread the first sentence of the memoir. How are these words ironic? What is the author really trying to say?

Question 3 Read pg. 308, what did you learn about the Blockalteste from the author’s description? Cite text evidence.

Question 4 Rhetorical Device- Allusion An allusion is a reference to a famous person, landmark, place or event outside of the story. What allusion is being used in the text? Why is this comparison appropriate for the circumstance? Cite text evidence.

Question 5 Connotations are words that authors use to help convey tone within a story. These words can have a positive or negative effect. Read lines 67-73. Find a word or phrase with a negative connotation. What tone is created by the use of this word or phrase?

Question 6 Wiesel includes statements and reactions from other prisoners, the head of the block, and the veterans of the camp that reveal different perspectives about life in the concentration camp. Identify examples of these different perspectives and explain what they reveal about the prisoners’ ordeal.
