Algebraic Expressions and Substitutions

2r VOCABULARY Letter used to represent an unknown value. Variable: Number before or in front of a variable, which is multiplied with the variable. Coefficient: 2r

r + 2r + 3r r + 2r + 3r = 42 VOCABULARY Combination of math symbols, but not the equal sign! Simplify only. Expression: Includes an equal sign and must solve for the value of the variable. Equation: r + 2r + 3r r + 2r + 3r = 42

Words for Operations Write an algebraic expression for each word expression. The difference of 2 and b. The product of -8 and a number. A number increased by nine. Twice a number.

Words for Operations Write an algebraic expression for each word expression. Four less than a number. A number divided by six. Twice a number, decreased by nine. Twice a number, increased by eight.
