What was the purpose of the Declaration of Independence What was the purpose of the Declaration of Independence? When was it signed? to explain why the colonies had chosen to separate themselves from Great Britain On July 4, 1776, Congress approved the final text of the Declaration. It wasn't signed until August 2, 1776.

John Locke has died (1704) but his influence/legacy lives on.
