Emotional & Social Development Chapter 14

General Emotional Patterns 4 year olds 5 year olds 6 year olds More self centered, impatient, defiant, boastful, but very loving Practical, sympathetic, serious, realistic, patient, generous and conscientious Stubborn, argumentative, resent directions, and think they know everything Help a 4-yr-old by respecting their need to explore and test themselves Improved attention span and memory helps complete tasks Crave praise and approval Avoid treating them like a toddler and use flexible rules Conform to rules better Starting school, finding status outside of the home

Self-Confindence Initiative: motivation to accomplish more Confidence improves when they are successful Rewards + The feelings of self worth and independence help them develop initiative Initiative: motivation to accomplish more

Emotions 4 year olds 5 year olds 6 year olds Anger physically fighting & anger lasts longer will try to hurt other children's feelings rather then being physical Use hurtful words even more. They tease, insult, nag, and make fun of other Fear- Well-developed imagination causes many fears during these years. Help child overcome fear by: Accepting their fear Don’t ridicule child Help them to face the fear Jealousy- Sibling rivalry- jealousy of brothers and sisters Caregivers should not compare children Jealousy often takes the form of tattling, criticizing or even lying

Social Development

Social Development 4 year olds 5 year olds 6 year olds Play best in groups of three of four More outgoing, and talkative They want everything and their own way Share toys and take turns Begin gossiping; concerned about what friends say and do Usually won’t want to share their toys, but jealous of others toys Fighting common due to 4 yr olds being bossy and inconsiderate Play best in groups of five or six and play is more complicated Best friends usually same sex

Preschooler Morals? Moral development – the process of gradually learning to base one’s behavior on personal beliefs of right and wrong. They can not understand the reasons behind the rules or difference between right and wrong.

Liar Liar Pants on Fire Explain the importance of telling the truth and being trusted. (“The Boy who Cried Wolf”) They may lie because they fear the consequences Help child separate fact from fiction. They may exaggerate details of a story

Developing Morals Consider the child’s age and abilities Set a good example Remember that learning self-discipline is a lifelong task Talk about mistakes in private Continue to show love despite misbehavior
