Session outcomes At the end of this session participants will have: reflected on the reality of a growing digital society and its impact on schools and learning, considered the responsibilities of teachers to provide relevant and engaging learning experiences for the students of this digital society Considered the old & new skills required by students to be successful in a laptop learning environment. Translated these skills in terms of their own expertise to deliver in a laptop learning environment. Staff engaging in the optional workshop sessions may have also… Contributed to a school wide audit of ICT skills and expertise to be used to plan for ongoing school based professional learning opportunities. Experienced some of the new tools available in a laptop learning environment 2

Just imagine…. What do students expect to happen in terms of learning? What do teachers expect to happen in terms of teaching? How comfortable do you feel about this in terms of your teaching and learning Its the middle of Term and every student in Yr 9 ( and many more in Yrs 10, 11 & 12) have come to class with a laptop computer in their hands… If you have an internet connection click the link below & view the clip while staff are reflecting 3

Are we ready for a Digital Education Revolution? In April the NSWSPC asked principals to rate the readiness of teachers in their school for the roll out of laptops to Yr 9 students, to teachers and to other selected students Christine Cawsey. Principal Rooty Hill HS 4

Activity 1: How ready are you? Using the personal session log you have been given ( handout 4.1) put a mark to indicate your perceived readiness for teaching in a one-to-one laptop learning environment. 5 High level of expertise Pockets of expertise Lots to Learn Fearful

Its not just the technology! The focus will never be on the technology. Rather, its the pedagogy that counts. Its worth keeping in mind that laptops are only a tool. Theyre at our disposal to make learning easier, and more enjoyable and meaningful for children. (Holmes, 2008) It is really not about the laptops. Its about what the 1:1 laptops enable in terms of new ways of teaching and learning. (Dunleavy, Dextert & Heinecket, 2007) Overseas experience has shown that students using laptops are more enthusiastic about learning, improve a wide range of skills from writing to creativity and achieve higher academic outcomes But remember …. Activity 2: The pedagogy is different Join your faculty group Appoint a recorder Discuss your understanding of the differences between a TRADITIONAL learning environment and a ONE-to-ONE LAPTOP learning environment in terms of both TEACHERS and STUDENTS. Record your discussion using handout 4.2 Rejoin the larger group and share the key points of your discussion. 7

A one-to-one laptop environment Swan, Kratcoski, Mazzer & Schenker, (2005) teachers believe a learning environment where students use laptops facilitates more authentic, collaborative and project-based learning where students are more engaged and motivated to learn, producing higher- quality work. 9

OLD and NEW learning skills Information management and processing skills including: – Question design – Searching NOT copying – Analysing, deconstructing, evaluating and synthesising (including deep skills in visual, graphic and audio texts) – Creating and constructing new knowledge – Task switching Writing – Sentence construction – Paragraph construction – Text construction Collaboration skills; intentional learning skills (to maintain a focus and avoid distractions) Christine Cawsey. What OLD and NEW tools / strategies do we need to have to begin to be successful in a laptop learning environment? In a faculty group consider the following questions and record your responses. (Handout 4.3) What are the OLD teaching and learning tools / strategies that we have that will continue to play a significant role in a one-to-one laptop environment? What NEW teaching and learning tools / strategies will become important for the success of our teaching and learning in a one-to-one laptop environment? What are the key areas of support that we need as a group to successfully implement a one-to-one laptop environment? As an individual; (Use Handout 4.1 ) Refer to your personal vision index card (from: Vision – Developing a vision for change) make a record of the new skills you would like to develop in order to achieve your vision in 12 months time What support will you need to achieve this? What will you do first? Share your plan with your faculty team 12
