That Good Book The Bible

Give Me the Bible The Bible contains the very word of God (2 Peter 1:20-21; 1 Tim. 3:16) Because the Bible is God’s word, it is able to accomplish wonderful things among men (Isa. 55:10-11) Let us consider some OT / NT images used to describe God’s word

The Bible Is Like… A light (Psa. 119:105, 130; 2 Pet. 1:19) – illuminating the way in a dark and lost world (Acts 26:18) A wise woman (Prov. 8:1) – offering godly advice in humanistic world (Col. 2:8) A fire (Jer. 5:14) – devouring all who are unfaithful to God (Heb. 10:27; 12:29)

The Bible Is Like… A hammer (Jer. 23:29) – breaking down all that is opposed to God and changing the lives of men (2 Cor. 10:5)

The Bible Is Like… A seed (Lk. 8:11; 1 Pet. 1:23) – bearing the fruit of life in dead world of sin (Rom. 6:21) A sword (Eph. 6:17; Heb. 4:12) – cutting into the soul of man to convict (Acts 7:54) A mirror (Jas. 1:23-24) – providing an accurate image of one’s needs in a distorted world (2 Cor. 4:4)

The Bible Is Like… A food (1 Pet. 2:2) – nourishing the soul of man that is starving for good
