THE PROBLEM SOLVING METHOD AN ENGINEERING APPROACH TO DESIGN

PHASE 1 Recognition of Need Identify the Problem

PHASE 2 The Feasibility Study Define the Problem- all elements Identify all the design requirements Identify the factors or restrictions -limits consider possible consequences of the design generate alternative solutions

PHASE 3 Preliminary Design Select the best solution(s) as they now appear Consider all the parts, components, materials, processes, methods, strengths, and dimensions for each of the possible design solutions Consider the availability of materials, components, labor, building, land, and finances Determine the impact of each design solution on society and on the natural environment Model, analyze, and test each candidate design as necessary Evaluate and compare candidate design as objectively as possible

PHASE 4 Detailed Design Examine all principal requirements consider any abnormal situations Refine models and analyze them Test for strength, endurance, and life and correlate test results Specify the design in detail, coordinate the details with those involved in production, construction, and marketing Record the design details in reports, drawings, graphs, and charts IF THE DESIGN SOLUTION IS SATISFACTORY GO TO PHASE 5. IF NOT START OVER OR GIVE UP!

PHASE 5 Implementation RECYCLE Identify the materials, personnel, processes, methods, marketing, financing and facilities that are required Produce or construct the design in an optimum manor Market the product or sell the system Monitor the success of the product or system and make design modifications as necessary Recover resources as necessary. In other words RECYCLE

GREAT!!! STICK WITH IT, OTHERWISE… IF IF THE DESIGN IS PROFITABLE IF PRODUCTION IS GOING WELL IF MARKETING IS BOOMING GREAT!!! STICK WITH IT, OTHERWISE… Modify , redesign, or abandon the design
