Fernandina Beach, Florida Sunday Bible College Chapters 5:21-48 The Sermon on the Mount Holy Trinity Anglican Church Fernandina Beach, Florida

Concerning Anger Matt 5:21-26 The rest of chapter five contains six turns of phrases marked by "you have heard that it was said," - "but I say to you." Each strengthens and deepens the moral law of Moses from outward action to include inward attitudes. Murder is a sin but it is equalled by wrath. Jesus broadens and strengthens the Law supporting love of the other.

Concerning Adultery Matt5:27-30 Adultery is sin but so is lust in the heart. Private sin is also evil. On the one hand, sexual sin in no worse than others. On the other hand sexual sin is sin - read Romans 6:23 Sexual sin is opposed to love, an unloving act. Jesus here broadens and strengthens the Law of Love.

Concerning Divorce Matt 5:31-32 Marriage is defined by God, not by man. Jesus holds us accountable to God's definition, not our own or our cultural norms Sins against the spouse are a sin agains love. Jesus gear broadens and strengthens the support of the Law of Love. What to do when we have fallen short of God's ideal

I'm already divorced and remarried. What do I do now? Repent, which means renounce the choices and attitudes which lead to your current situation and replace them with God's ideal. I.e. abandon your former ways and return to God. Resolve never to repeat the sins of your past, and to deal with future failures with reference to God, first. Memorize St. John 3: 17 and say it daily.

Concerning Oaths Matt 5:33-37 Swearing is an attack on love and a sign that love has been abandoned. Oaths are necessary only when deception is a possible alternative, and love does not deceive. Here Jesus strengthens and broadens the law in support of the Law of Love.

Concerning Retaliation Matt 5:38/42 Retaliation, retribution, and vengeance are contrary to Love. God is our example. As a Father he is exceedingly slow to punish the most deserving of sinners, for he is Love. Here Jesus strengthens and broadens the law in support of Love.

Love Your Enemies Matt 5:43-48 Jesus brings home the point of this chapter thus far: love Sin against love is far greater, deeper and more systemic than we admit. God even loves his enemies, and Christ wills that we do the same.
