Lit Circle Day #1 Friday, April 22

Lit Circle Roles- Extra Credit (+3 Leader/Recorder) (+2 Timer) to Discussion Grade Choose a group LEADER for today who will help direct the conversation – generally allows others to speak first Choose a TIMER who will monitor time and encourage everyone to speak throughout the hour. You help keep the discussion moving and on-topic  Choose a RECORDER: takes group attendance and writes down group work when directed to do so.

Recorder – Beginning of Hour Fill out your name, novel title and today’s page requirement Pass paper around for each person to print their name at the top – verify last names [not initials] are included Be ready to record group answers as directed  Everyone talks during the discussion, even the leader, recorder, and timer Find your novels! You should take out your note sheet, too 

Let’s Get Started- Everyone Chimes In  “Go-around ice-breaker”: What was your initial reaction to the novel before you started reading? Reaction to first 20-30 pages? Now? What do you like & dislike about the author’s writing style? BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER…. 3. Leader: Ask group members to “summarize” events in the story so far, up to the point where y’all were supposed to read to…. This gets everyone on the “same page” 

Discuss the following: Beginning Basics  Discuss the following: SETTING – When & where is your story? Mood/Atmosphere: How does the setting feel? How do characters seem to be reacting and behaving? Author's Tone – What is the topic? What is the author’s “attitude” toward that topic? CHARACTERS: Who have you met so far? What do you think of them, their behavior, their situation? “What kind of people do they seem to be? How do you know?”

Where do you see the various CONFLICTS being developed? Which CONFLICTS are present? Person vs Person …Nature … Self … Society … Fate …Destiny Where do you see the various CONFLICTS being developed? Which conflict seems to be the MAIN CONFLICT and what makes you believe that?

Synectic: How does this image connect to your novel Synectic: How does this image connect to your novel? Discuss- be creative!

10 Minutes Open Discussion & Questions My favorite part so far was when…. Does anyone know…? Can someone explain the part when… What did you all think when _____ happened? Why did…? I couldn’t believe it when….

Specific Novel Questions Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Here’s the satire coming into play- what seems to be the REAL job of President Z. Beeblerox? How is this a political commentary on heads of state? The Alchemist: What seems to be the importance of dreaming in the novel? If it’s a metaphor being developed, what might it be a metaphor for? Hmmm…… 1984: What eerie parallels do you see to today’s world in lifestyle, concerns & technology? When did he write this?!? Fahrenheit 451: Compare Clarisse and Mildred while considering this quote: “You’re one of the few who put up with me. That’s why I think it’s so strange you’re a fireman, it just doesn’t seem right for you somehow” The Life of Pi: Religion / religious philosophy is clearly an underlying theme. How do you see Martel developing this in the beginning, especially while Pi is growing up in Pondicherry, India? What does his name mean and how might it connect with a popular religion?

Connect the quotes to your novel:

Make (2) Story Predictions

Recorder: Verify/Write down for next week: Page to read to:__ Next….. Leader? Timer? Recorder?
