Leader after Mao dies from 1976-1997 Deng Xiaoping Leader after Mao dies from 1976-1997

Policies under Deng I. Improve the economy by allowing some capitalist ideas. A. Four Modernizations (1978) -Plan to modernize China by 2000 Agriculture: farming methods were modernized and mechanized. Industry: upgraded and expanded. Military: defense systems and military forces were improved. Science and Technology: promoted and developed.

B. Responsibility system: Communes were taken apart. Peasants can keep some profits after giving the gov’t a portion of their crops. C. Some privately owned businesses & property. D. Local management of state owned factories: decide rate of production, workers and salaries. E. Stress on consumer goods: what people want F. Special Economic Zones (SEZ) Foreigners could own, invest and operate businesses in China.

Results of Deng’s reforms Positives The economy grew, and some Chinese enjoyed a better standard of living. Foreign relations and trade improved. Negatives Crime and corruption grew. The gap between rich and poor increased. Deng’s economic changes caused some Chinese to demand greater political freedom.

The party orchestrates national celebration of 50 years of communism

1979 – 2016: One Child Policy Designed to reduce the overpopulation problem in the urban areas. Families are restricted from having more than one birth. Fines/penalties enforce it. Traditionally, couples prefer male children, so female infanticide was not uncommon in earlier times. Now daughters are often given up for adoption. Ban was lifted due the lack of sustainability The male to female ratio was very imbalanced
