Shadows Page E101

How does light travel? Light travels in a straight line.

Shadow Formation Shadows form when a person or an object blocks the flow of light rays.

Jimmy’s hand is blocking the beam of light coming from his flashlight. Therefore, he can create the shadow image on the wall.

Sun and Shadow How does it work? When you stand in the sunlight, you block the flow of the sun’s rays. This is why your shadow forms.

More Information When the sun is low in the sky, either early in the day or late in the day, long shadows form. Shadows at sunset

When the sun is high in the sky, in the middle part of the day, shadows are short.

The Sundial A sundial can be used to tell the time of day, based on the position of the shadow on the dial. In the morning, the shadow falls on the east side of the dial. Later in the day, it falls on the west side.
