GOAL ZERO December 5, 2018

GOAL ZERO Safety is a deeply held value, integral to honesty, integrity and respect for people Goal Zero means relentlessly pursuing no harm to people and no significant incidents        Goal Zero shifts how we think and act Goal Zero is possible Each of us needs to make our contribution by “doing the right thing”. We do this by following the rules, intervening when necessary, and taking responsibility for our own safety and that of our colleagues, every minute of every day. December 5, 2018 2

Isn’t mostly incident free good enough? Say 99.9%? IS GOAL ZERO POSSIBLE? Isn’t mostly incident free good enough? Say 99.9%? Is it really necessary to have an incident free day? Is a zero incident rate too idealistic and unachievable? Is it even possible to have zero incidents? Isn't mostly incident free good enough? To make the point clear, several examples are listed exhibiting what life would be like if things were done correctly 99.9% of the time. 99.9% means........... December 5, 2018

99.9% Means… There would be 6 unsafe plane landings per day at the Fort McMurray Airport The Canada Postal service would lose 1,000,000 pieces of mail every year There would be 2522 children that receive critical injuries playing minor hockey each year in Canada Doctors would give 1 new born baby to the wrong parents every day 5 incorrect surgical procedures would be performed each week in Alberta alone 27 debit transaction would be deducted from the wrong bank accounts each day You would miss 2,160 breaths each day December 5, 2018

Zero incidents makes more sense 99.9% safe doesn't really sound very safe at all does it? Suddenly the quest for ZERO incidents makes more sense. You don’t need permission to stop an unsafe act. Everyone has an obligation to stop work that is unsafe! Goal Zero Working together we shall reach it. We can live with it. December 5, 2018
