What do I need to know? I can analyze structural and behavior adaptations to predict which population of organisms will survive in an environment. I can state the levels of classification. I know which level is the most specific. I can use a dichotomous key. I can list several adaptations organisms have.
How do populations change over time? Natural Selection How do populations change over time? “Survival of the Fittest”
What is fitness? Camouflage Read this… Living things that are well adapted to their environment survive and reproduce. An adaptation is any characteristic that increases fitness, which is defined as the ability to survive and reproduce. What characteristic of the mice is an adaptation that increased their fitness? Camouflage
Natural Selection Over many generations heritable adaptive characteristics become more common in a population. This process is called natural selection. Natural Selection—process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully than less well adapted individuals do
Population—group of individuals of the same species Natural Selection leads to adaptation within a population. Population—group of individuals of the same species There are 4 conditions that need to happen in order for natural selection to occur. Overpopulation Variation Struggle to Survive Successful Reproduction

Who came up with the idea of natural selection? Charles Darwin—a scientist who studied nature and coined the idea of natural selection

Orange vs. Brown Goldfish You will receive a baggie of goldfish. As a group, randomly pick out 10 fish. You are a predator and like the orange ones. You want to eat those…but you will tolerate the brown ones to survive if the orange ones aren’t available. You will eat 4 orange goldfish (unless four aren’t available, then you may eat a brown one). Then, you will randomly draw 4 more goldfish. Do this for 5 rounds. Each round is a generation.
Collecting Data… GENERATION ORANGE BROWN TOTAL 1 Count Count 10 (eat 4 orange ones) 2 (Draw 4 More) 3 (Draw 4 More) 4 (Draw 4 More) 5 (Draw 4 More)
