Do Now: If you were going on a camping trip… Where would you go? What would you need to bring? What biota would you see there? Do not tell anyone where you are going! Write your answers on the small sheet of paper. With a partner, share your information. Have your partner, guess where and when you are camping. Read and relate the next slide to this Do Now…

Do Now: Write short answer in your notebook to this question. When is an adaptation no longer considered an adaptation? Be specific. By definition, an adaptation is a structure or behavior that all organisms have within the population which helps them to survive. If the environment changes, the adaptation may no longer benefit the organisms. So, one can say that the structure or behavior is no longer an adaptation EVOLUTION CONNECTION: Organisms are adapted to abiotic and biotic factors by natural selection. Nature selects “for” a particular structure or behavior. Thus, those organisms within the group will survive, reproduce and pass on the adaptation. Thus, the adaptation will become more prevalent within the population. Can you write a story illustrating the evolution connection?

Relationship between an organism’s DNA and natural selection. Organism’s DNA determines the adaptation (Born with it). Nature selects for a good adaptation. Survival and reproduction increases the number of organisms with the adaptation. Real world example… The pronghorn is a highly successful herbivorous running mammal of open country A pronghorn’s habitat is arid, windswept, and subject to extreme temperature fluctuations Pronghorns able to survive and reproduce under these conditions left offspring that carried their genes (DNA) into subsequent generations.

Biomes Video Introduction Large geographic areas where organisms share specific adaptations, either physical or behavioral, which enable them to survive and reproduce. Terrestrial biomes on Earth are each distinguished by characteristic temperatures and amount of precipitation .  Aquatic biomes can be broken down into two basic regions, freshwater (ponds and rivers) and marine (oceans and estuaries).

Climatograph Activity Procedure Reminders Use two different colored pencils to create the (5) unknown climatographs Red for temperature and blue for precipitation First, plot points for temperature and then connect points to create a line graph Second, plot the points for precipitation and using a ruler, draw a line from the point to the x-axis. *To help graph, cover up the y-axis that you will not be using to plot the point. Assignment: due next period Finish making all climatographs Read each biome description. Underline the distinguishing feature Analyze graph and then write the name of the biome with the appropriate graph.

Post Lab Discussion “Why do ecologists create climatographs for different regions of the biosphere” To see if there is a relationship between temperature and rainfall within a biome and between different biomes. To create a baseline for future study. Identify changes that occur from year to year. To infer causes for changes or to identify factors that keep the biome from changing To use to help come up with solutions to help protect the ecosystem. Let’s take a look at your climatographs…

Break into groups of 4-5. Discuss the choices for each unknown biome. Discuss the choices with each other in the group. Identify which person in the group will explain the choice. Practice your answer with your group Each person must speak and present. Remember: When you speak, always face the audience and speak louder. Also, the presentation should clearly state evidence to support your answer.

Post Lab: Use the handouts of the climatographs to answer each question. State which biome fits best and why . Lies closest to the equator. Highest the highest annual precipitation. Lies furthest from the equator. Has a measurable snowfall. Would experience doldrums. Where dry air picks up moisture
