Warm Up Use <, >, and = to compare. 368 ___ 386 14,902 ____ 14,920 15,833 ____ 15,833 471,028 ____ 470,128
Today’s Lesson In this lesson, you will compare decimals to hundredths with models and using place value. Then you will order decimals using greater-than and less-than symbols. Let’s look at the Envision Video for this lesson and take the quiz.
Think and write When would you have to compare decimals?
Comparing decimals When you compare decimals, you have to compare the digits in the greatest place value. For decimals, tenths is the greatest place value. This means that .68 is greater than .59 because 6 tenths are more than 5 tenths. If the decimals have the same number of tenths, move to the hundredths place. If they have the same hundredths as well, move to the thousandths place, and so on. Example: 4.895 > 4.893
Practice! Compare these decimals using >, <, and = . 0.9 ___ 0.3 0.12 ___ 0.31 0.89 ___ 0.89 0.92 ___ 0.98 1.36 ___ 1.47 0.777 ___ 0.775
Ordering decimals When you order decimals, you have to look at the greatest place value. Whichever decimal has the greatest tenths place digit is the largest. If the tenths are the same, move to hundredths, and so on. Example: Order 3.12, 3.18, and 3.11 from least to greatest. 3.11, 3.12, 3.18
Practice! Order these decimals from least to greatest. 4.18, 4.21, 4.15 0.342, 0.341, 0.343 0.815, 0.798, 0.789 1.2, 1.21, 1.18 0.4287, 0.4284, 0.4289 0.773, 0.787, 0.774
Practice! Order these decimals from greatest to least. 5.67, 5.76, 5.78 3.043, 3.041, 3.049 0.923, 0.921, 0.928 8.134, 8.143, 8.314, 8.431 0.1, 0.12, 1.03, 1.01
Problem 1 Farmer Rose wants to order the heights of three raspberry bushes, in feet, from least to greatest. How should she order them? Bush Height, in feet 1 4.15 2 4.09 3 4.36
Problem 2 Farmer Jack weighs the piglets on the farm and decides to list the weights from greatest to least. How should he list them? Piglet Piglet Weight Oinker 14.782 lb. Wilbur 14.827 lb. Hoggy 14.789 lb. Pigtastic 14.872 lb.
Lesson Wrap Up In this lesson, you learned that models and place-value charts help compare decimals. Greater-than and less-than symbols can be used to order decimals. Reflection: How will you remember today’s lesson?
