Review: order of operations Order of operations is the order in which you solve a math problem with many components. The first rule of order of operations is P.E.M.D.A.S. Don’t forget to solve the problem from left to right!

Parentheses The first step of the order of operations is parentheses. Ex. (3 x 6) = 18 Ex. (3 x 6) + 2 = 20 á 18 + 2 = 20
Exponents The second step of the order of operations is exponents. á 52 = 25 Ex. 3 + (3 + 2)2 = 28 á 3 + 25 = 28
Multiplication The third step of the order of operations is multiplication. Ex. 6 x 4 = 24 Ex. (3-2)2 x 4 = 4 á 1 x 4 = 4
Division The fourth step of the order of operations is division. Ex. 8 ÷ 2 = 4 Ex. 8 ÷ 2 + (3 x 6) = 22 á 4 + 18 = 22
Addition The fifth step of the order of operations is addition. Ex. 3 + 6 = 9 Ex. 3 + 4 ÷ 2 = 4 á 3 + 2 = 4
Subtraction The last step of the order of operations is subtraction. Ex. 16 – 4 = 12 Ex. 18 – (2 + 2)2 = 2 á 18 - 16 = 2

Integers Integers are all of the positive and negative whole numbers. There are no fractions or decimals that are integers. ….. -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 … Negative Direction Positive Direction -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
Positive Integers Are to the right of zero Are valued greater than zero. Express ideas of up, a gain above, or a profit. The sign for a positive integer is (+), however the sign is not always needed. Meaning +4 is the same value as 4.
Negative Integers Are to the left of zero Are valued less than zero. Express ideas of down, below, or a loss. The sign for a negative integer is (-). This sign is always needed.

Order Integers from Least to Greatest You need to know which numbers are bigger or smaller than others, so we need to order them from least to greatest. Example: Order the integers -4, 0, 5, -2, 3, -3 from least to greatest. The order is -4, -3, -2, 0, 3, 5. -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6

Absolute Value Absolute value of a number is the DISTANCE to ZERO. Distance cannot be negative, so the absolute value cannot be negative. -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
