Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 1–7) Main Idea Example 1: Problem-Solving Strategy Lesson Menu

I will solve problems by using the guess and check strategy. Main Idea/Vocabulary

The Bactrian camel has two humps, while the dromedary camel has just one. Zach counted 19 animals with a total of 27 humps. How many camels of each type are there? Example 1

Understand What facts do you know? Bactrian camels have two humps. Dromedary camels have one hump. There is a total of 19 camels and 27 humps. What do you need to find? How many camels of each type are there? Example 1

Plan You can use the guess and check strategy to solve the problem. Use combinations of 19 total camels to guess. Example 1

Solve Guess: 10 Bactrian camels and 9 dromedary camels Check: 10 × 2 = 20 humps 9 × 1 = 9 humps 20 humps + 9 humps = 29 humps Too high. Adjust your guess: Try fewer Bactrian camels and more dromedary camels. Example 1

Solve Guess: 7 Bactrian camels and 12 dromedary camels Check: 7 × 2 = 14 humps 12 × 1 = 12 humps 14 humps + 12 humps = 26 humps Too low. Adjust your guess: Try more Bactrian camels and less dromedary camels. Example 1

Solve Guess: 8 Bactrian camels and 11 dromedary camels Check: 8 × 2 = 16 humps 11 × 1 = 11 humps 16 humps + 11 humps = 27 humps This guess is correct. Answer: So, there are 8 Bactrian camels and 11 dromedary camels. Example 1

Check Look back at the problem. 8 + 11 = 19 camels and 16 + 11 = 27 humps. So, the answer is correct. Example 1
