Homework Review

Rational Numbers A rational number is: Any number that can be written as a ratio (or fraction) Rational numbers include fractions, terminating and repeating decimals, ratios, and percents.

Switching between Fractions and Decimals It is important to be able to express rational numbers as both fractions and decimals. Ex: ½ = 0.5 We will use the TOGGLE button on the calculator to help us convert between the two.

Equivalent Rational Numbers Until the 21st century, stock prices were recorded as fractions. Today, those prices are shown as decimals. For example a gain of $2.25 per share used to be recorded as 2 ¼. How can a loss of 5/8 per share be recorded as a decimal?

Try a few on your own.

Compare and Order Decimals When comparing decimals, write one number under the other with the place values line up. Compare the digits in each place-value position, moving right.

Comparing Decimals

Ordering Decimals Put the following in order from least to greatest. Ex 1: 0.04, 0.027, 0.2, 0.098 Ex 2: -0.5763, -0.58, -0.5367, -0.0875

Compare and Order Fractions

Comparing Fractions Visually There are two cakes on the counter that are the same size. The first cake has ½ left. The second has 5/12 left. Which cake has more left?

Adding Rational Numbers When adding two rational numbers, the sum will be the sign of the larger number. Ex: 5 + (-8) = -9 + 21 =

Multiplying Rational Numbers When multiplying two positive numbers, the product is positive. When multiplying two negative numbers, the product is positive. When multiplying a positive and a negative number together, the product is negative.

Multiplying Rational Numbers POSITIVE NEGATIVE

Multiplying Rational Numbers Examples: 1. 2.

Real World Applications

Real World Applications In an online survey, about ¼ of teenagers go to sleep between 9 and 10PM, while 13/50 of teenagers got to sleep at 12AM or later. Which group is larger? Which operation would you use?

Real World Applications Tessa feeds her dog Roscoe 3.75 cups of dog food per day. If she buys a bag of food that contains 165 cups, how many days will the bag of food last? Which operation would you use?
