Literacy Ninjas Meet again! September 27, 2018

CONVERSATION WITH THE AUTHOR As you read the article, consider yourself a detective who has an interview planned with the author. In the boxes provided, ask a question spurred by the preceding text. You will then collaborate with others to determine the most important questions you would like to ask.

You Be the Judge: Identifying Effective evidence As you read the text, consider the claim statement: Asteroid mining is a lucrative business that benefits economic and scientific development. Work with a partner to rank the pieces of evidence on the worksheet that support the claim statement from 1 (best supports the claim) to 6 (not as highly supportive). In the space provided, use reasoning to explain how the evidence supports the claim statement. Provide a counterclaim from the text and support it with one piece of evidence from the article. Sarah—20 minutes Text 1: Space Mining Connect back to SEPs Engaging in Argument from Evidence – use evidence to identify strengths and weaknesses of claims, critique ideas The more students practice reading scientific texts and these skills the more they can also replicate use of stronger evidence and argumentation in their own explanations. Shift focus – engaging in text-based discussion
