DQ, Paraphrase, Summary When to use what

What is a direct quote (DQ)? Anything copied word-for-word from a text

When do I use a direct quote? To quote a definition When the author’s wording couldn’t easily be put into your own words It’s already a quote of something someone said

How do I use it? Always put quotes in “quotation marks” to indicate to the reader that you are copying something/someone else exactly Embed the quote into a sentence with your own writing

What does it look like in my writing? Supporters of no sex education in schools typically argue that “teaching young people about safe sex is tantamount to encouraging them to have sex” (Stoley). Studies have shown that abstinent teens report “better psychological well- being and higher educational attainment than those wo are sexually active” (Arther).

What is a paraphrase? Putting a sentence or two from another source into your own words

When do I use a paraphrase? 75% of the time When you want to use information another person created without plagiarizing

How do I use it? Your paraphrase should be slightly shorter than the original text Put the information into your own words and then cite the source at the end of the sentence

What does it look like in my writing? Supporters of no sex education in schools typically argue that teaching students about safe sex is the same thing as promoting sexual behavior (Stoley). Supporters of no sex education in schools typically argue that “teaching young people about safe sex is tantamount to encouraging them to have sex” (Stoley). Studies have shown that abstinent teens report “better psychological well-being and higher educational attainment than those who are sexually active” (Arther). Studies have shown that abstinent teens report feeling better mentally and doing better in school than kids who are sexually active (Arther).

What is a summary Putting the main ideas of a source into your own words Only the main points

When do I use it? When you want to condense a source’s information into a smaller form To give an overview of the topic

How do I use it? Summarize a source in 1-2 sentences and include a citation at the end

What does it look like in my writing? Some argue that sex education should be taught in schools because research shows it can reduce the rate of unintended pregnancy and STDs (McMann).
