Clicking “Add” puts the selected Subject in the search box Clicking “Add” puts the selected Subject in the search box. Now to look up China in the Places index.

Oooo… giant hint for question in book…

“Index created” search – ready to run! How many results do you get? Advanced Search interface: terms and fields search – ready to run! How many results do you get now?

The index lists search…. vs. the Advanced Search interface search. (slightly) fewer results (slightly) more results Hmmm. Why? What is making the difference? (the answer is unexpected… and not very welcome! See next slide)

Adding the double quotes only knocks out one result UH OH!! It’s NOT that the Index lists search puts double quotes around the terms (which I was convinced that it was). It’s much more subtle… and bizarre. It seems to be the difference between using the SU field code (what you get from using the field dropdown) vs. the DE (descriptor) field code (auto-supplied by choosing from the Subjects index list). GE vs. ZG doesn’t seem to matter. (See result numbers below) UGH!! 
