Job Performance Requirement 16-12 Door Removal Using Hydraulic Spreaders

A Make certain that the vehicle is stabilized. Insert a halligan between the door handle and body, moving the bar up and down to create a purchase point where the tips of the spreaders can be inserted.

to tear, stop spreading, reposition the tool and start over again. B Open the spreaders, trying to roll or “pop” the door latching mechanism off the safety bolt. If metal begins to tear, stop spreading, reposition the tool and start over again. JPR 16-12B

C Once the door is free from the safety bolt, it’s possible that enough room will be available to remove the patient. If not, or if the door is to be completely taken off, a safety strap should be applied to the door to allow a second rescuer to control its movement as it is separated from the vehicle. This will prevent injuries to feet and legs as well as prevent the door from damaging equipment such as hoses or power cords. The spreader tips should be placed into the top hinge of the door, widening it enough so that it breaks. JPR 16-12C
